CBS rejects Super Bowl ad for medical marijuana

Source: Omaha World Herald-Bloomberg

By Craig Giammona / Bloomberg

The Super Bowl isn’t ready for medical marijuana.

Acreage Holdings, the multi-state cannabis company backed by John Boehner, says CBS rejected a television advertisement that calls for the legalization of medical marijuana. The network, which is airing the game on Feb. 3, nixed the proposed spot after seeing a rough outline, according to the company.

While medical marijuana is now legal in more than 30 states, the federal prohibition on cannabis has restricted research and made it difficult for some potential patients to get their hands on a drug that proponents say helps treat seizures, pain and other ailments.

The advertisement aimed to “create an advocacy campaign for constituents who are being lost in the dialogue,” Acreage President George Allen said. Super Bowl airtime would have been the best way to achieve this, he added.

Marine Corp. veteran Alex Griffith of Cincinnati, Ohio, right, watches as his prescription is bagged on the first day of patient sales of Ohio's Medical Marijuana program at Cresco Labs CY+ dispensary in Winterville, Ohio, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019.

So it matters not to me what they advertise or who is playing, singing the anthem or whatever.

No interest in any of their games.

They'll allow every other ad to be a prescription drug of alcohol commercial but legal weed. Oh no. The networks can't allow that.

at some state levels, it is still, under federal law, illegal.

CBS, at its local affiliates, are subject to FCC regulation so they must comply with federal regulations which may include not advertising illegal products.

And the FCC, which can impose fines and/or revoke broadcast licenses is part of the federal govt.

We were about to watch an old Sherlock Holmes movie on Roku with some really elderly family members we were visiting, when (wham!) an ad for a marijuana supermarket plays.

It was actually a cute, creative ad. Much more entertaining and original than the stuff Anheuser-Busch puts out. We all loved it.

Pot is still a Schedule 1 drug as stupid as that seems. With Trumps desire to shut down legit news organizations I could see the FCC going ape shit on CBS.

Plus if the ‘proved’ the funding for the ad came from pot sales then RICO could apply.

As always, I am disappointed at DUers who slam CBS for the only move they could make. I am pro legalization but would do the same thing if it was my company.
