One in 20 Britons does not believe Holocaust took place, poll finds

Source: The Guardian

One in 20 British adults do not believe the Holocaust happened, and 8% say that the scale of the genocide has been exaggerated, according to a poll marking Holocaust Memorial Day.

Almost half of those questioned said they did not know how many Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and one in five grossly underestimated the number, saying that fewer than two million were killed. At least six million Jews died.

The poll, commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, a charity established and funded by the UK government to promote and support the international day of remembrance, echoes the findings of a survey carried out in seven European countries in November.

That poll found that one in three people knew little or nothing about the Holocaust, and an average of 5% said they had never heard of it. In France, 20% of those aged 18-34 said they had never heard of the Holocaust; in Austria, the figure was 12%. A survey in the US last year found that 9% of millennials said they had not heard, or did not think they had heard, of the Holocaust.

Ignorance of history is one of the leading factors in denying history.

Don't we teach history anymore? Oh, Charter Christian schools. I guess they don't believe the moon landing or the sun is the center of solar system either.

I have met a lot of Breitshart types who challenged me about the holocaust calling it just Israeli propaganda.

In the other half that heard of it, 1/3 don't believe it. This not just about the Holocaust, but historical events in general.

They were always bringing her way too much food and fussing over her....they looked old enough to be her grandparents. God love them, they are one of the reasons I have contributed to the Holocaust Museum since before it was built.
Never again.

One is far right (Breitbart fanatic) , and said "I don't deny the Holocaust happened, but some historians say it was exaggerated". When challenged to name them, he's clammed up, so far. One is on the left, and is "just asking questions" about whether the facts are actually "victors' truth", and is excusing his attitude with "the truth hurts". The questions are, inevitably, ignorant. It's hard not to let loose with insults against them (which would get deleted by the moderators). Thankfully most, from all shades of political opinion, know what happened and are arguing against them. And the couple of determined anti-semites that left the forum some months ago haven't tried to come back, yet.

unabashedly expressed strongly anti-semitic views and believed in international conspiracy theories about Jews. I'm not talking about disapproval of Israeli government policies. I'm talking The "Protocols of Zion" stuff.
