Twin explosions kill 20 people at Philippines cathedral
Source: Associated Press
Twenty people were killed and 81 injured when two bombs exploded outside a Roman Catholic cathedral on a southern Philippine island where Muslim militants are active security officials have said.
The countrys national police chief said the first bomb went off in or near Jolo cathedral during a mass on Sunday, followed by a second blast outside the compound as government forces were responding to the attack. Oscar Albayalde said the dead included troops and civilians.
A spokesman for the Philippines president, Rodrigo Duterte, vowed the countrys military would hunt down the attackers. The enemies of the state have boldly challenged the capability of the government to secure the safety of the citizenry in that region, said Salvador Panelo. The armed forces of the Philippines will rise to the challenge and crush these godless criminals.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but police suspect the bombings were carried out by Abu Sayyaf, a militant group that has pledged allegiance to Islamic State and is notorious for its bombings and brutality.

(1,718 posts)When the spanish under Magellan first arrived in the Philippines in 1521 they were shocked to discover that the muslims had already gotten there first. Despite over 300 years of spanish colonization the muslims resisted in Mindanao and were never conquered. Things changed though when the US conquered the Philippines and finally crushed the muslim rebellions there, but were given relative autonomy.
After the Philippines was granted independence however things changed. More and more catholics began to settle in Mindanao because it was sparsely populated compared to other islands, an example being Manny Pacquiao's family. Tensions eventually erupted into war between catholic and muslims fighting over land, with muslims being more and more outnumbered as more catholic immigrants settled into Mindanao. It's unlikely to end anytime soon because muslim birthrates are lower than catholics and the population just keeps growing.

(21,841 posts)I have yet to see it on our news though. too busy talking about roger stone.
also the dam that broke and killed unknown amounts of people and about 300 are missing. I haven't seen that on the news either.
I, of course, don't watch the news 24/7 but I would think that these are 2 pretty big stories. Years ago they would have been.
