Former Florida Power & Light nuclear plant employee files whistleblower lawsuit

Source: Palm Beach Post

A former Florida Power & Light Co. St. Lucie nuclear plant employee has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the company alleging retaliation against him following a Nov. 21, 2009 incident at the plant.

Mark W. Hicks, 53, of Port St. Lucie, alleges in the complaint that he was terminated from his job as operations manager for refusing to start up the plant’s Unit 2 nuclear reactor after recognizing it had a leaky valve.

After Hicks made the decision, he reported to FPL nuclear division executive vice president Manoochehr Nazar, who then “shockingly and recklessly insisted that Hicks start up the reactor,” the lawsuit says.

Following the incident, the lawsuit alleges that Hicks’ supervisors began to target him and that his performance ratings were lowered. He that he was eventually forced out and terminated on June 25 of this year.

It is unconscionable that they should fire someone for standing up for safety at a nuclear power plant so soon after Fukushima!

Even if all they care about is money, surely they must have noticed the deleterious effect of the disaster on TEPCO's bottom line.

The NRC should hire him.
