Dan Snyder to Host Mitt Romney at Fundraiser at his Mansion
Source: DCist.com and Politico
Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder and his wife have already given Republican contender Mitt Romney as much money as they legally can (check his donations here), but that doesn't mean that the billionaire owner can't help the floundering campaign raise money from other people. Per Politico's Playbook:
DAN SNYDER, the beloved Washington Redskins owner, will host Mitt Romney at an upcoming fundraiser at Snyder's mansion in Potomac, Md.
Romney has attracted support from quite a few billionaires, but what does it say that he's got Snyder on his side? Let's review.
>> Taxes and Government Spending: While Snyder is a billionaire and owns one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world, he still believes that jurisdictions should fight over how many tax breaks and giveaways his team should get. Virginia was the latest to bite, giving Snyder a $4 million grant to upgrade the team's training facility in Ashburn.

Even later breaking developments: apparently a fundraiser, if one ever had been scheduled, will not be taking place.

Paying for parking in the stadium lot - even when you don't come in a car.
In 2001, Snyder got Prince Georges County to ban pedestrians from walking to FedEx on game days. His lawyers argued that the walk-in ban was necessary for the safety of ticket holders.
The beginning of the end of Snyders pedestrian ban came when D.C. lawyer and lifelong Redskins fan J.P. Szymkowicz went to a game and, having lost his parking pass, parked his car at Landover Mall, which sits across from a main entrance to the team-owned parking lots. Police officers at the main intersection wouldnt let Szymkowicz cross the street to go in.
Thus was born a class-action lawsuit that Szymkowicz filed on behalf of Redskins season ticket holders. In it, he alleged that the team and county officials conspired to violate state antitrust laws.
The smoking gun, Szymkowicz told me during the litigation, came when he found a report by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission responding to the Redskins request to add 5,000 new parking spots to existing FedEx lots.
Getting the Ban Back Together
The prohibition was originally put in place by Prince Georges County officials in October 2000. The publicly declared motivation was to prevent stadium-bound walkers on Redskins Road from getting run over by cars. Szymkowicz, a P.G. native, argues that the real reason folks can no longer walk on county-owned land is to increase the number of cars that park in Dan Snyders lots at $25 a pop. And he asserts that the fact that the original ban was not enforced after Redskins games, when just as many folks are using the sidewalks but all the parking revenues have been squeezed out of them, proves that something other than safety was behind it.
If they can let people walk safely into Camden Yards, they can let people walk safely into FedEx Field, he says. This is about money.
Szymkowicz learned about the ban while on his way to a Redskins/Dallas game at FedEx in 2001. A friend had given him a ticket to sit in the owners suite.
My friend lost his parking pass, and I didnt want to pay $25 to park, says Szymkowicz, so I thought wed just park for free at Landover Mall [across the street from FedEx Fields front entrance] and walk over. Then the police were telling me I couldnt walk into the stadium. I didnt even know there was a ban until then.

(7,712 posts)Dan Snyder not hosting Romney fundraiser
Both the Redskins and the Romney campaign have now told us that the report is not true; that there are no announced or planned fundraisers at Snyders home at this time.

(18,124 posts)what do you expect from right wing snakes who consider themselves one percenters. One reason I do not watch professional sports. Too much 1 percent money underneath always trying to keep us distracted with 'roller ball' type shows

(997 posts)Here is my Dan Snyder story. In 2005 after a 3 year wait I received notice that I could purchase season tickets. All I had to do was put down a $100.00 deposit so I did. In March of 2006 my son was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma and my families life changed forever. I called the Redskins sales office and I asked if I could get a refund of the $100.00 dollars and I was told it was non refundable, at that point I explained to the gentlemen on the phone why I was asking for the refund and although he was sympathetic he said that Mr. Snyder had made it clear to the sales staff that no deposits were ever to be refunded regardless of the circumstances. It was only a $100.00 but Snyder was not going to let it go no matter what. Please remember that this franchise was suing the suite ticket owners who had defaulted on their 5, 7 or 10 year club level ticket plans. Many of these people had lost jobs during the recession and could no longer afford the annual ticket and parking fee. A survey of other NFL teams disclosed that Snyder was the only team owner who litigated against his fan base.
This man has ruined the team that I have rooted for since i was 8 years old and it does not surprise me that he is a Romney supporter. It is just one more reason not to go to that piece of crap stadium. He demands that you call him Mr. Snyder and if you are an employee at Redskin Park you are never to address him at all. As a prior poster stated he got the Commonwealth of Virginia to give him a 4 million dollar tax break in exchange for moving training camp from Ashburn to Richmond. Just one more example of the 1% taking our money and giving nothing in return.

(34,174 posts)The origin of this incredibly offensive word stems from the bounty placed on dead Native Americans. They got paid by the "Redskin". I can't imagine a pro sports team calling themselves the Denver Darkies or Kansas City Kikes. Why is Redskins ok?
Off topic, I know, but the word hurts my heart.

(11,353 posts)You can't get a thousand people in the streets to protest the fucking they're getting from Wall St., the corporations and our government but, you can fill a football stadium and a NASCAR track. That says to me that not enough people are feeling the pain yet and too many still have the attitude"I have mine, fuck the rest of you.". When will they stop buying tickets and tell city governments no to funding pro sports. In Denver people spend their last dollar to get to a Bronco game. If we could get 50,000+ in the streets on Sunday in every state to protest instead of buying tickets to a pro game or a NASCAR race we might start to get somewhere.
