Gov. Gretchen Whitmer extends Michigan stay home order to June 12

Source: Detroit Free Press

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday extended her stay-at-home order past its scheduled May 28 expiration to June 12, adding that public venues such as theaters, gyms and casinos would remain closed.

She said while coronavirus cases and deaths are clearly declining, "we are not out of the woods yet."

"If we’re going to lower the chance of a second wave and continue to protect our neighbors and loved ones from the spread of this virus, we must continue to do our part by staying safer at home," she said in a statement first reported by the Free Press.

Whitmer's announcement comes a day after she made several changes to further relax a sweeping stay-at-home order that has been in place since March, allowing social gatherings of 10 people or less immediately and telling retail businesses that sell goods they can reopen to customers for appointment-only shopping Tuesday.

But, this holiday weekend should test western MI, if there are a lot of weekend visitors from the Chicago area.

It seems like "putting a price on human life", but a lot of small business owners are pretty desperate at this time. I can understand they want to open. Especially when they look at some "essential businesses", like liquor stores, that have been allowed to stay open.

aren't the kind that stop the virus. People don't understand its not about them, its about keeping others safe. The younger generation seem to be the worse when it comes to wearing masks here.

last week. There are a lot of MAGAts in that part of the state which is a big reason why I got the hell out of Grand Rapids in 2015. But now they're streaming into Lansing so I just can't win. I'll stay home, as usual.

that most departments state wide have basically quit enforcing or never even bothered enforcing anything in the first place. I know officially Detroit PD is still supposed to, however 2 of the officers I know there said they are doing the bare minimum to keep the higher ups happy. For example, one of them has a fairly popular basketball court within their precincts patrol area. The city removed the hoops a while back to prevent people from playing games. They have gotten a complaints of games still being played as someone replaced the hoops with portable ones. They still respond if someone calls, but at this point its all for show. Most of the time the kids run when they show up and return after they leave and if they see it during their normal patrol route, they are ignoring it.

A few friends have headed up north yesterday and today, all commented on how heavy the traffic was heading up. A couple neighbors already came by to invite us to bbqs this weekend. Not sure how well this is going to be followed at this point.

If there is widespread disregard for the rules, it all collapses. It may be better for the rules to be loser, if it gives some feeling that people are still following them.

They kept coming up with so many rules that didn't make sense, that it undermined the ones that did.

It doesn't help the situation when the state government refuses to release any of the data that is driving the decisions & ordering that the FOIA is suspended. That only accelerated the levels of distrust and cynicism.

They'll start all sorts of protests, armed and dangerous, so their 'freedumbs' aren't stepped on. All it takes is a few key people and the internets catch fire.
