The DEA Has Just Been Authorized to Conduct Surveillance on Protesters
Source: Buzz Feed News
The Drug Enforcement Administration has been granted sweeping new authority to conduct covert surveillance and collect intelligence on people participating in protests over the murder of George Floyd, according to a two-page memorandum obtained by BuzzFeed News.
Floyds death has spawned widespread protests across the nation, which, in some instances, have included violence and looting, said the DEA memo. Police agencies in certain areas of the country have struggled to maintain and/or restore order. The memo requests the extraordinary powers on a temporary basis, and on Sunday afternoon a senior Justice Department official signed off.
Attorney General William Barr issued a statement Saturday following a night of widespread and at times violent protests in which he blamed, without providing evidence, anarchistic and far left extremists, using Antifa-like tactics, for the unrest. He said the FBI, DEA, US Marshals, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would be deployed to support local efforts to enforce federal law.

The DEA is limited by statute to enforcing drug related federal crimes. But on Sunday, Timothy Shea, a former US Attorney and close confidant of Barr who was named acting administrator of the DEA last month, received approval from Associate Deputy Attorney General G. Bradley Weinsheimer to go beyond the agencys mandate to perform other law enforcement duties that Barr may deem appropriate.

They're going to do it, regardless, and hope to fight it out in court.

(21,624 posts)The DEA is routinely used as a cover for CIA espionage in foreign countries - on the rationale that foreign governments are (generally) reluctant to impede their work for fear they be labeled as "uncooperative on the war on drugs" or some such nonsense.
It was only a matter of time, then, that some GOP authoritarian deploy them against the American people themselves for purely political purposes (which I believe they already have from time to time).

(7,402 posts)Covert surveillance sure sounds like something a Judge would need to approve. And this is after Trump raised such a stink about no basis to tap Carter Page, even though he was caught talking to a Russian who had an authorized wiretap. This is blanket surveillance without any oversight. What could possible go wrong there. Guess what, a Black Lives Matter leader could be talking to someone like Joe Biden so is that fair game? We have a dictatorship here folks.
