Minneapolis Star Tribune endorses Ilhan Omar's primary challenger

Source: The Hill

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is endorsing Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-Minn.) challenger ahead of next week's primary, saying the first-term lawmaker "wants to lead a movement" instead of serving her constituents.

The editorial board on Wednesday backed Antone Melton-Meaux, praising his "strong progressive values," for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, which encompasses most of Minneapolis.

"After careful consideration and interviews with both, the Star Tribune Editorial Board recommends Melton-Meaux, a first-time candidate with strong progressive values that align well with the district, as well as consensus-building skills honed as a professional mediator," the editorial board wrote.

"Melton-Meaux brings a different sensibility to this race, one grounded in helping resolve disputes to move forward — a skill this country is much in need of," it continues. "While Omar wants to lead a movement, Melton-Meaux seeks to serve the Fifth District."

Look at the change in attitude brought by the BLM movement. MovementS are how social change begins.

when there may not be one. Given the shake-up of status quo capitalism (cue Naomi Klein) that's required to breach racial divides, why go with someone who shrinks from the responsibility to go bold into the future. Or we will not have one. I saw conciliation as Obama's defining trait and he tried to get along with the Repubs who hated him, advanced a timid Recovery Act, and later spoke of committing the "grand bargain" that would have compromised Social Security. Repubs fear Omar. They will eat Melton-Meaux alive.

and John Lewis while doing everything in it's the power to destroy the Democratic party in favour of its so-called Democratic-Socialist faction/matrix is not a way to beat trump. Movements sometimes destroy and make things worse. Trump being POTUS a fine example. And to now start dissing President Obama, again, in this dire time that needs unity in our Party is unconscionable. I so hope Melton-Meaux wins.

If she wants to start a movement, she should become an activist. I don't see how she is serving her constituents or the Democratic party. Being a legislator is a serious and important job. I am tired of congressional newcomers using their elected positions to undermine the reputation and accomplishments of more experienced Democrats.

When Al Franken was first elected to the senate, he kept a low national profile and put all his focus on serving the people who elected him. He treated his job with great dignity and respect and rarely gave television interviews until he had proven himself and was elected to a second term. I can't imagine him publicly booing someone like Hillary Clinton.

Hillary or Harris.

Strong women, & a woman of color ...
That argument seemed to blow right past these two women when it came to who Omar's backers backed.

Just sayin.

'Just not those women'..

Maybe it has to do more with exactly what Melton-Meaux describes as the difference.

Caruso-Cabrera argued that Ocasio-Cortez is "M.I.A." and cares more about building a national profile than her constituents. In an interview with CNN, she said the congresswoman "wants to be a national star," adding, "I want to be a congresswoman for the people of the Bronx and Queens."

of the Star Tribune changed. The new owner, Glen Taylor, admitted that there would be changes to the editorial board. Glen Taylor, the owner of NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves has given more than $1 million to GOP candidates and causes. This endorsement should not be seen as any kind of shock.

I have no idea how that primary will go. Melton-Meaux started advertising simultaneously with the opening of the absentee ballot mailing period. Omar waited until last week. Many people had already voted before her ads appeared.

The district is very diverse, to be sure, but it also includes a lot of areas where the majority of voters are less left than in other parts of the district.

I'm not sure how it's going to go. I think Omar has a slight edge, but I'm not sure at all. It could go easily to Melton-Meaux.too. We'll have to wait and see. Here in the 4th congressional district, our representative, Betty McCollum will have no problem being re-elected. No problem at all.

From my neighborhood in S W Minneapolis over to the western edge of the district there are a lot of Melto-Meaux lawn signs but the eastern part looks differsnt. It's anyone's guess how it will go. Information from July 17 is not that old since many including my husband and I mailed in our ballots around that time

in 2018. Then, it was Omar vs. a candidate who was not a person of color. This year, that's not the case. That may get rid of the sense of urgency people were feeling in 2018. If that happens, then the western side of the district may dominate the voting. Omar successfully brought out the Somali community. If they show up in smaller numbers, then she'll be vulnerable.

Personally, I think Melton-Meaux's advertising early could possible make a big difference. Omar's supporters had to go pretty negative, and I'm not sure that will work out so well for her.

I'm eager to see what happens.

I don't think the newspaper endorsement means much and she has a lock on the minority vote which makes it hard to beat her. Sure, the richer areas around the lakes will not vote for her, but she will win by a large margin in south Minneapolis and northeast Minneapolis. A lot of the voters in Minneapolis are younger and swing to the left. I just don't an affluent corporate attorney will draw much support from the inner city.

I've gotten all the political ads for that race however, and all I can say is that, for me, there is just something creepy about Melton-Meaux.

I can't put my finger on it, but there's just something about him that sets off my "ick" alarm. Were I in that district, I would definitely vote for Omar.
