Coronavirus updates: US death toll rises for 5th straight week

Deaths from COVID-19 continued to increase for the fifth straight week, according to The COVID Tracking Project.
This week, 7,591 deaths were reported, up 11.5% from the week before, it found.
The steady increase follow surges in new cases in June and July, it said.
More people have died so far in August than were reported in the month of March, it also noted.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, testing has declined 9.1% from last week.

(7,392 posts)So 9.1% fewer tests means 9.1% fewer infections uncovered. Doesn't impact the death count either way, though. Duh. Indeed, it probably means a delay in finding out and starting treatment which should translate into a worse outcome. But the 5-7 day, or longer, wait for results really makes the tests a whole lot less effective in containing the disease.

It's appalling, especially since it didn't have to happen this way. Badly managed Republican states are being hit the hardest. Mass. and VT. are the outliers, both run by Republicans but doing extensive testing and tracing.
My state didn't open the schools yet, something that most likely has kept our spread slower.
This will get worse before it gets any better. I just hope it's not going to get exponentially worse as we move indoors out of the cold.
