Cuomo clears New York schools statewide to open, carefully
Source: AP News
LBANY, N.Y. (AP) New Yorks governor said Friday that he would allow children statewide to return to classrooms for the start of the new school year, citing the states success in battling the coronavirus pandemic.
The announcement by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo clears the way for schools to offer at least some days of in-person classes, alongside remote learning.
Everywhere in the state, every region is below the threshold that we established, Cuomo said during a conference call with reporters. If theres a spike in the infection rate, if theres a matter of concern in the infection rate, then we can revisit.
Many New York school districts have planned to start the year with students in school buildings only a few days a week, while learning at home the rest of the time.

(2,436 posts)Or is it that only Democratic states are allowed to open schools?
Don't think we won't be seeing that headlining on Fox tonight.

Every region is well below our COVID infection limit, therefore all school districts are authorized to open.
If the infection rate spikes, the guidance will change accordingly.
School districts are required to submit plans to NYS for review.

@NYGovCuomo
As schools reopen NYS is requiring all school districts to:
1) Post their remote learning plans & their testing/tracing plans online
2) Set dates for 3-5 discussion sessions with parents & community (prior to Aug 21)
3) Have at least one separate discussion with teachers alone
In schools as elsewhere, masks are required when social distancing is impossible.
Every student should plan to have one with them at all times.
If a student does not have a mask, the school will be required to provide one.

(128,527 posts)as we call it here. And I think the focus may be for elementary school kids too, where it's harder for them to engage in remote-learning (despite the fact that many of them were born and raised with a cell phone in their hands as a "toy" ).
The urban schools? That will be dicey if not near-impossible, even if for a couple days a week in shifts.

(14,337 posts)staff, and parents. I did read that the district on LI where my daughters graduated from has opted for 5 days in person. The article stated that parents and teachers by majority wanted this. Daughter (not same district) said school on LI where her sons go to will also be 5 days in person.
Day Care Centers are open in person, since months ago, both NY and here in PA. Daughter's friends have been sending their young sons to Day Care while they have to go to work. A lot of parents simply cannot work from home, or have grandparents nearby to stay with the kids.

(24,259 posts)As does my daughter. The school district her kids are in is offering 2 choices.. hybrid or remote. Since one daughter is a high risk, as are my husband and I, my daughter has signed up for remote for all 4 of her children until there's a decent vaccine available.
