U.S. drops tariffs on Canadian aluminum, avoiding retaliation

Source: CTV news

OTTAWA -- The United States is lifting its 10 per cent tariff on Canadian aluminum, retroactive to Sept. 1, backing down from the trade dispute just hours before Canadian retaliatory measures were to be announced.

This major move was announced by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. In a statement, the top American trade official cited “consultations” with Canadian officials and an expectation that trading of aluminum is likely to balance out in the months ahead, as why the Americans decided to withdraw what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called “unjust” tariffs.

1. So when you're getting grief from big corps

like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and major beer producers, who weren't getting their cans because of their President's dumb tariffs, then it was time to back down. Over 50% of the aluminum used in the US comes from Canada.

I had American friends that couldn't purchase their favourite soft drinks or beer, because of the aluminum shortage.

IQ45 not only doesn't understand how his government works, but he doesn't know how tariffs and trade agreements are supposed to work. Everything he touches backfires.

IDIOT!

4. It doesn't matter, of course. He got his sound-byte out of it, and that's all he really wanted.

Now all his dim-bulb followers are going around claiming he rescued the American aluminum industry. Same thing with NAFTA. Made a big noise about tearing it up, then slapped another name on it (rebranding is his THING in life), and declared victory. Ditto for trade with China.

5. Canada would have announced surgical tariffs that targeted red states and swing states,

like appliances from Ohio and canned fruit juices from Florida. Interesting! Guess who blinked?
