Venezuela Chavez having chemotherapy, says VP Maduro

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is receiving chemotherapy in a Caracas hospital after cancer surgery in Cuba, the vice-president has revealed.

Nicolas Maduro was speaking after a Mass at a military hospital in honour of the president.

On Thursday, he went on TV to say Mr Chavez was battling for his life.

The Venezuelan leader, re-elected in October last year, returned to Caracas last month, but little has been heard about his condition until now.

1. Venezuela rejects "absurd" rumours over Chavez's death

(Reuters) - Senior aides and relatives of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez countered on Friday a crescendo of rumours that the socialist president may be dead from cancer, saying he was still battling for his life.

"There he is, continuing his fight, his battle, and we are sure of victory!" his older brother Adan Chavez, the governor of Barinas state, told cheering supporters.

Speculation about Chavez, 58, hit fever pitch this week, fed in part by assertions from Panama's former ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Guillermo Cochez, that the Venezuelan leader had died.

"The launching of absurd and bizarre rumours by the right wing simply discredits them and isolates them further from the people," said Chavez's son-in-law Jorge Arreaza, adding that the president was "calm" in a hospital with his family and doctors.

Chavez in chemotherapy but in ‘good spirits’: VP

CARACAS: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is in “good spirits” but fighting for his life as he undergoes chemotherapy in a Caracas military hospital, the vice president said, revealing new details about the leftist leader’s treatment.

Nicolas Maduro, the leftist leader’s political heir, rejected on Saturday a wave of rumours about Chavez’s health and lashed out at the opposition, which accused him of lying about the president’s condition.

Maduro disclosed for the first time that Chavez began chemotherapy following his fourth round of cancer surgery in Cuba in December and decided to continue the treatment in Caracas on February 18.

“He has strength that is superior to the treatments that he is receiving and he is in good spirits, battling, receiving his treatments,” he told reporters after a mass for Chavez in a new chapel on the hospital grounds named “hope.” When he went into the operating room in Havana on December 11, Maduro recalled, Chavez told his aides that there was a “possibility that he would not come out” alive, but he survived it.

Caracas, March 03, 2013

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is still in charge and mulling political, social and economic policies even as he receives a new round of chemotherapy, his vice president said on Saturday.

Vice president Nicolas Maduro said that the 58-year-old socialist leader, who is convalescing in seclusion at a Caracas military hospital, sent "guidance" to his cabinet as recently as Friday.

"He is staying informed and in charge as the chief who was ratified by our people various times," Maduro said at an event broadcast on state-run television.

No right wing vs. left wing here but just the facts: no one saw Chavez' plane touch down from Cuba. No one saw him on a gurney getting into/out of the plane; no one saw him enter a hospital. Very strange that the gov. wasn't out there getting photos and videos of his return to Venez.
