'Racial slurs' aimed at wife draw McConnell's ire
By Roger Alford, Associated Press 10:54p.m. EST March 2, 2013

WINCHESTER, Kentucky (AP) — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell lambasted a liberal group on Saturday for criticizing the Asian heritage of his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, calling its Twitter messages "racial slurs" and "the ultimate outrage."

McConnell forcefully defended Chao, who was born in Taiwan and who moved to the U.S. as an 8-year-old with her family aboard a freight ship.

"They will not get away with attacking my wife in this campaign," McConnell told about 100 home-state supporters at a Republican dinner in Winchester.

"This woman has the ear of (at)McConnellPress — she's his (hash)wife," the group Progress Kentucky tweeted on Feb. 14. "May explain why your job moved to (hash)China!"

Had Obama only been fluent in African-American Vernacular English, had he been very dark skinned, it would have been a harder task for him to be elected.

We claim that American is deeply racist, then as soon as a statement seems to acknowledge ways to minimize the effect of the racism we act as though only the originator of the statement is racist.

While yesterday certainly seems like a setback for the effort to defeat McConnell, in actuality most Democrats in the know around the state – ranging from liberals to moderates to Greg Stumbo – realize that this is ultimately a win in the long run. Why? Because the erratic mess of bad messaging and strategy that has come to characterize Progress Kentucky – as well as the strange compulsion of national media following the Senate race to treat Progress Kentucky as some kind of important entity that should be covered and quoted – is effectively over and done with.

In reality, those within the state familiar with Progress Kentucky knew they were never going to be a major player in this race, and now the national media is onto that fact. While Progress Kentucky says they will continue, you’ll have a hard time finding anyone who will now defend, support, and give them money. And it’s not like anyone was giving them money to begin with. They had only raised $4,000 online, and while they haven’t filed yet with the FEC, we have to doubt that they’ve managed to raise a great deal more than that.

While we don’t have much desire to pile on to the individual responsible for yesterday’s mess – having a viral national story depicting you as a vile racist is a lot to go through – many Democrats in Kentucky familiar with Progress Kentucky’s operation, staffing and strategy could see a train wreck coming from a mile away, but couldn’t do anything to stop it, nor the fixation that national media had for treating them as a big player that should be given a loud voice as the key “anti-Mitch Super PAC.” http://fatlip.leoweekly.com/2013/02/27/r-i-p-progress-kentucky-dec-2012-feb-2013/

It's regrettable, but Progress Kentucky are a bunch of nobodies and largely irrelevant.

First, Progress Kentucky apologizes again to Elaine Chao and Senator McConnell for the inappropriate tweets sent by our organization. Those tweets did not reflect our values, and we are committed to making sure nothing like that happens again.

We also apologize to our many supporters, and all Kentuckians working for change in 2014, for those communications. Comments with references to race, ethnicity or sexual orientation have no place in any debate, and we are deeply embarrassed by such a mistake.

Our key goal is to elevate the conversation about Senator McConnell’s record and the kind of representation Kentucky deserves. We didn’t advance that goal with a few of our tweets. We pledge to do better in the future.

Finally, we recognize we did not handle this situation appropriately. We should have reacted quicker and stronger in rectifying the situation. We are doing that now....
