FCC Chairman Genachowski to Announce Departure Friday: Sources
Source: nyt/reuters
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski will announce on Friday that he will step down, according to an FCC official, leaving the agency after a four-year term that focused heavily on improving Internet access across the country.
Genachowski told FCC staff on Thursday of his plans to make the Friday announcement, the official and an industry source said. He has been widely expected to exit in coming weeks. His term expires in June.
A spokesman in Genachowski's office declined to comment.
The news comes in the same week that Robert McDowell, senior Republican commissioner on the five-member panel, said he will leave in a few weeks. The FCC oversees TV, radio, cable, satellite and Internet industries.
Rules governing FCC appointments mean President Barack Obama will nominate a new Republican commissioner and a Democratic chair in coming days and the two will likely go through their Senate confirmations at the same hearing.

(42,700 posts)because he's going to be paired with a republican to fill Commissioner McDowell's spot. If both aren't confirmed, neither are confirmed and the FCC is left with a 2-1 Democratic majority (with the two Democrats being Mignon Clyburn, daughter of Congressman Jim Clyburn) and Jessica Rosenworcel, former legal aide to Commissioner Michael Copps (now with Common Cause) and former staffer to Sen. Rockefeller.
The current odds on favorite for the Chairmanship is Tom Wheeler, former leader of the trade associations for the cable industry (back in the early 80s when it was a small industry) and the cellular industry (when it was just taking off). He's independently wealthy and 66, so he's not going to be using the FCC chairmanship as a stepping stone to some cushy job. Which makes him an unusual and interesting choice (if, in fact, he gets the nomination).

(2,397 posts)I mean a big campaign with Move-On, Credo, Media Matters, etc. I, for one, want to know who the Chair will be, and if he supports reform. I'm willing to raise a stink if others are too. I would prefer that Mr. Copps get the Chairman spot. But I'm just sayin, let them know we're watching and at least tell them we want someone who speaks for us. Whatever thats worth. I'm glad to see Julius go. He is worthless when he starts hinting at allowing Rupert have a newspaper and TV station in same market (L.A.). I will be calling Credo on Monday.
