Obama gets diplomatic coup before heading to Jordan

Source: CNN

Jerusalem (CNN) -- President Barack Obama arrived in Jordan on Friday after scoring a diplomatic coup just before leaving Israel when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned his Turkish counterpart to apologize for an Israeli commando raid in 2010 that killed eight Turks and an American of Turkish origin in a Gaza-bound flotilla.

The apology, long sought by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, brought a restoration of normal relations between Turkey and Israel, two vital U.S. allies in the Middle East, according to a statement from Netanyahu's office.

It happened in the phone call during a final meeting between Obama and Netanyahu at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv minutes before Air Force One departed for Jordan.

Obama and Netanyahu have some time on their hands so Obama says, "Hey! I know! Let's call Turkey!"

Or was it something more overt like, "You know, I'd really appreciate it if you'd give a ring to Turkey before I leave." {Wink}

then the prez segued and asked Bibi "You know what really goes good with Turkey?... an apology for killing them."

Bibi couldn't argue with that and the rest is history.

if an apology to Turkey deflates a nagging issue among a sphere (US, Israel, Turkey/NATO). You'd want to diminish ongoing tensions prior to doing anything that might suddenly elevate tensions.

Two heads of state don't make up and re-establish diplomatic relations on a spur-of-the-moment phone call suggested at the last minute at the airport by another head of state. Israel, Turkey, and the US have been working on that phone call for some time, I'd bet.

Something in regard to Iran? I seem to recall something about reports of prior plans for a strike involving Turkish airspace and refueling in the Caucasus.
