Jesse Jackson Calls For Mass Protest Against Detroit's Emergency Financial Manager

Source: Detroit Free Press

The Rev. Jesse Jackson called for a mass, nonviolent protest in Detroit against the new emergency financial manager at a rally this morning at city hall.

The activists alongside Jackson pledged to file a lawsuit next week challenging the constitutionality of Michigan's new emergency manager law, which takes effect Thursday and grants broad powers to the incoming emergency financial manager, Kevyn Orr.

Jackson, who was joined by Detroit Councilwoman JoAnn Watson, Congressman John Conyers and a union representative, also called on the U.S. Department of Justice to intervene to protect Detroiters' right to vote.

“We marched too long and bled too much and died too young for the right to vote to have a governor, whether it’s Gov. Snyder or Wallace or whoever … to take away the impact of our vote,” he said.

I campaigned for him in '88. This manager law is a 15th Am. violation.

While I'm not a huge fan, his speaking style draws you to what he is saying. It's almost hypnotizing.

I hope this can get go all the way to the Supreme Court. Americans need to understand what is going on there - I've mentioned it to some people and they have not heard a thing about what is being done to Michigan.

As I've said about this in the past, massive civil disobedient protests and labor strikes. LOTS of labor strikes. That's the ONLY thing that MIGHT slow Snyder's roll. Nothing else even has a chance of working.

... is getting old. He will go till his dying day standing up for the People. People who were burned up in a factory fire where the exits were locked. People who have been disenfranchised at the polls. People with an IQ of 60 on death row. Speaking to protestors in Wisconsin in the freezing cold. Prostesting all over the country against the illegal wars of GWB. If no one else will speak up or come to the rescue, Jesse will be there, speaking truth to power. Thank you, Jesse and thank you Purveyor for posting this.

and the suburbs sure as hell don't care.

Get the suburbs to rise up against it, and we might see something.

If Jesse Jackson wants to see what Detroit HAS been reduced to, he needs to stick around long enough to see what incompetents like Watson have done to speed it's decline. Rather than spending his short PR face time at a few comfy, warm, secure churches, auditoriums, whatever, he needs to get into the streets and see what a disaster our "elected leaders" are. Unless Jackson has developed a sound economic strategy and a tangible plan to turn Detroit in the right direction, his opinions and pronouncements are useless. How about we get a little more in the way of lights, police and effective management and a little less rallying and speechmaking. Those haven't netted the city ANYTHING thus far.

Thank for your concern Mr. Jackson but I will take our chances with the EFM. You only show your face when it is a chance to get publicity. I did not see you when Pontiac got an EFM or any of the other cities but here comes an EFM to Detroit and oh it is wrong now. My question is where were you for the past 37 years of my life when our Politicians where destroying my city? Where were you when money was being taken? Where are you when families are struggling and police and EMS departments are being shut down and downsized. Once again thanks but no thanks.

(BTW both commenters are black; one of their profiles lists Malcolm X under "inspirational people" and likes the "I love it when I wake up in the morning and Obama is president" page. Not lost Freepers who confused freep.com and freerepublic.com. )

Perhaps network news would be more likely to shine the light on this situation if he were given the title of ACD, "Appointed City Dictator."

I hope enough people heed Rev. Jackson's call and call attention to democracy being systematically denied while the Voting Rights Act has been called into question.

Where was Jesse when Gov. Granholm appointed the EMF to manage Ecorse and Pontiac?

Would he have compared her to Wallace, as well?

He's following the old "never let a crisis go to waste" political playbook.

Maybe Jesse should have spent more time voicing concern when his corrupt buddy Kwame was raping the city of hundreds of millions of dollars in political patronage schemes.
