PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - The winner of a $338 million Powerball jackpot told several media outlets Monday that his first priority will be helping his family.
Pedro Quezada, 44, entered Eagle Liquors store, where the ticket was sold, late Monday afternoon. The Passaic store owner ran Quezada's ticket through the lottery machine to validate that it was a winner as a newspaper and television outlets recorded the moment.
The New Jersey Lottery confirmed that the winning ticket was validated at the store at 4:30 p.m. Monday, but officials said they didn't yet know the winner's name.
Quezada, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, told reporters in Spanish that he was "very happy" and that he intends to help his family.

(6,347 posts)Not sure if applies to a number this big but 40% of lottery "big winners" (I think that's $1miilion or more) file bankruptcy within 5 years.
The bankruptcy filers skew toward people who didn't have a true savings account prior to winning the lottery. In other words, they lived hand to mouth before winning and, once they had a big slug of money in their savings account, they didn't know how to protect and manage it. Being able to manage your cash flow and cover your bills is a different skill than being able to manage your savings for the future.

Of course being racist they were too cowardly to comment, so I have to give you credit for at least being upfront about your racism.

(3,687 posts)that taxes should not be paid on lottery winnings?
Governments run lotteries to make a profit, just like any other fund-raising scheme.

(4,558 posts)Their heads will explode over an immigrant winning. They'll dig up any dirt they can and make it look like immigrants are taking not just our jobs, but our winning lotto tickets.
Mark my words.
Congrats to the winner and his famiy.

(16,903 posts)A meal down here -- a decent meal -- is only 400 pesos or so, which is about 9 dollars.
If he is like a typical Dominican, he will have a large extended family. Everyone will benefit.
I hope this fella gets good financial advice, he will most likely get ripped off in some form or another.....

(3,186 posts)Here is a neighbor describing him and his wife, from the article:
"This is super for all of us on this block," she said. "They deserve it because they are hardworking people."
Whenever I hear about someone winning, I always hope that the person is someone who is truly in need of a boost. This guy and his family will get that, and much, much, more. Good for him!
Agree with you though, on the financial advice.
