Egyptian Navy Captures Divers Cutting Internet Cable, After a Week of Disruptions

Source: Softpedia

The SEACOM cable network

Cut internet cables near Egypt are causing issues for the regions served by these cables, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

While accidental cuts happen on occasion, these may have been intentional as the Egyptian Navy has captured three divers allegedly trying to cut an internet cable near Alexandria.

This after previous problems were fixed, indicating that it may have been a string of incidents. It's unclear yet though whether the three men or any other saboteurs were responsible for the earlier outages.

The problems began last week when the SEA-ME-WE 4 (South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 4) cable was cut near Egypt. SEACOM, the company that operates the cable has been working on restoring it ever since.

...involve scuba gear, you've hit prime-time.

I'm suspecting whomever it is is probably locals paid by someone to do it. And the people who were paid to do it really have little/no idea who's ultimately behind it.

If it's not locals or somehow people who can be tracked to a state military...geeze, that could get ugly.

It sure as hell wouldn't surprise me with these nutters. Morsi's got into office via crooked shenanigans, is only really supported by reactionaries, and has no qualms with police-state type bullshit, kinda like a smarter, and much nastier, conglomeration of Dubya Bush & Dick Cheney(with hints of Nixon and a splattering of Ronald Reagan & Pat Buchanan).

...easily understandable, so the outpouring of opprobrium can be easily channeled.

Operation Northwoods, for instance. Or later, the bandying-about the Bush administration (IIRC) did with painting a jet with UN colors and allowing it to be shot down over Iraq. Turning to the Israelis, the King David Hotel bombing.

I'm not saying it's out of the question, but it's usually more straight-forward stuff.

Cutting an internet underwater cable...eh... (?)
