Boston mayor to announce he won’t seek re-election

Source: AP

BOSTON (AP) — Boston’s longest-serving mayor is set to formally announce he won’t seek re-election for a sixth term. Mayor Thomas Menino planned an announcement for 4 p.m. Thursday at Faneuil Hall.

A person with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed Menino’s decision to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The 70-year-old Democrat was re-elected to a fifth four-year term in 2009. He has recently faced a series of health problems but has remained popular with voters.

Menino’s decision is expected to trigger a political scramble to replace him as a new generation of political figures eyes the mayor’s office. He had been considered a heavy favorite to win re-election.

I hope he is stepping down only because of his age, (70) after 20 years in office.

He had been ill for several months, and only returned to his home a few days ago, after being in a rehab center part time, and working as much as he could, (often more than 40 hours a week, as he had always done before he was ill).

I am worried that he might not be that well. He could have easily won re-election, but perhaps at 70, retirement is a reasonable course.
