Top Republican Warns Of French People Illegally Crossing Mexican Border In South Texas

Source: Think Progress

During an appearance on a local radio station Thursday morning, Texas Senator John Cornyn (R) claimed that people from all over the world are now entering the country illegally through Texas and insisted that any Congressional effort to reform the immigration system must invest in border security.

“You gotta stop the flow of people coming across and my friends and your friends Edd who have places in South Texas tell me, as a matter a fact a guy told me last night, he said we’ve got people coming across our place speaking Chinese, French and basically all of the languages in the world, coming through and across our southern border,” Cornyn said during an interview on KSEV.

While lawmakers agree that border security should be part of any comprehensive immigration reform package, the U.S. border is more secure than ever before. Border crossings are at 40-year low — falling to their lowest level since the Nixon administration — and net undocumented migration is at or below zero. Border agents patrol every single mile of the border every day and the vast majority of the border already meets one of Homeland Security’s highest standards of security.

“People are willing to try to weigh in and try to improve our broken immigration system,” Cornyn conceded. “What we have now is a defacto amnesty when we have 11 or 12 million folks living here who have come in without going through the proper channels.”

Edd refers to Edd Hendee, morning show host on Houston station KSEV. KSEV's parent company is run by Texas staet senator Dan Patrick, and the company also owns a similar right wing station in Dallas (KVCE). Other shows on KSEV include Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, and Mike Huckabee. Sounds like KSEV is trying to out-crazy KTRH and KPRC.

I don't want to live there (I'm Canadian). Chinese do, but that's because they live in a communist country. Don't worry about the french or the Aussies or the Germans; once they catch on, they'll self-deport.

Is this guy serious? What world is he living in?

I believe the House was trying to pass a resolution to re-brand them Freedom Fries.
It must have failed after I suggested a new name for one of Bill O'Rielly's bath time favorites after the loofa, namely Freedom Ticklers.
I always had a sneaking suspicion it retaliation for French Intelligence trying to give Bill Clinton the goods on the Iran-Contra participants.
Bill was looking to the future instead of the past and GHW Bush went ahead and gave that Christmas Eve blanket pardon when Co-Intel leaked their intentions.

Oh those nasty Frenchies, they will do anything to leave home and escape into one third world country from another.
Presumably to corrupt Texas Toast and turn it all into French(Freedom)Toast, lousy commie socialist medicine, free education lovers of pig dogs and bidets.
Whats next? Will they reinvent Mayonnaise as a communist plot to bring down capitalism?
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]There are many other places where French is spoken besides France.

To wit: http://www.fll.vt.edu/French/francophonie.html

Even if Senator Conehead's source was right about French being spoken, that in no way means that people from France are trying to enter the U.S. illegally -- which is a laughable thought in itself!

I saw this coming from day one, when the Republicans said they'd sign on to a plan that has a path to citizenship and all that, but that the implementation of these reforms would be triggered only AFTER achieving a certain level of border security.

What level? Impermeability? This is just another goalpost move, and now Cornyn SEES FRENCH PEOPLE!!!!

And 2 hours out of every work day are used to subsidize our military industry. And we still can't afford to be healthy.

With their socialist Prime Minister but Guyane and Haiti are Fench speaking countries in this hemisphere -- not that I would think that more than a mere trickle would be crossing the Texas border -- but France is not the only option. In fact, it would seem to me that French speaking people from west Africa would be more likely than France. Then, again, Cornyn is not the brightest bulb around.

The French and Chinese speakers are part of the 300 people that Cornyn said are crossing every night on a friend's ranch on the Texas-Mexico border. What a gas bag Cornyn is, you know when he speaks, something stupid will come out.

I suspect there is some merit in what he says. We know there is a long history of people smuggling into the U.S. by sea and by land. People from all over the world, for a variety of reasons, are willing to pay smugglers to get them into the country. I suspect among those are people who speak French, Chinese, etc.

I for one do advocate establishing control over our borders. That is not intended to be racist or xenophobic. If you don't control your border then why have a border at all? If we have an established international border that requires individuals coming into the U.S. to possess certain documentation (U.S. nationals as well as non-nationals), the law should be uniformly applied.

That said, our current immigration system is severely broken. Immigration is a privilege and not a right.

The statute of liberty's plaque statement, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door." was crafted in the late 19th century when the North American continent was still sparsely populated. There was land to be homesteaded, industries to build, etc.

The world of today is far different from that. We in the U.S. have arguably filled the continent. We are running short of resources from water to available land. It isn't that we cannot accommodate a larger population but that increase needs to be smart and serve an agreed purpose.

I am all for immigration based on bona fide cases of asylum where an individual or family fears for their safety or persecution in their homeland.

I am all for immigration based on matching jobs where demand exceeds American labor supply.

I am all for programs that enable workers to come to this country to work to fill jobs that, quite honestly, American workers do not want. Those include back-breaking farm and construction work. That said, we should ensure that workers that would come under these programs are paid and treated fairly.

I am all for allowing workers that come legally for employment purposes to have a pathway to citizenship. A worker that comes here in a H1B visa or under a prospective guest worker program that has demonstrated their ability and willingness to work and contribute, learn English, pay taxes and follow our laws should have a way forward if they want to attain U.S. citizenship.

I am also for immigration based on true hardship cases. Those will be very specific and fact-based.

But we do need to establish control over our borders or simply erase them off the map. Again this is not because I am anti-immigration or xenophobic or racist. It is because our resources are limited and we need to be able to manage resources against our population. It is that simple.
