Ex-Pennsylvania Gov. Rendell invited on jet that crashed
Source: The Boston Globe
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Philadelphia Inquirer co-owner Lewis Katz invited him on the doomed flight that crashed, killing seven.
Rendell said Katz tried to persuade him Friday to attend an event at historian Doris Kearns Goodwins Massachusetts home, but he had another commitment.
Katz, a 72-year-old business mogul, and six others were returning home to New Jersey on Saturday night when the plane crashed on takeoff. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what may have caused the crash.
The former Democratic governor said Katz died at maybe the high point of his life. Katz was thrilled this week after he and a partner won an $88 million auction for the Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News, Rendell said.

(4,452 posts)I seem to remember him and Shumer deciding that a worthwhile candidate for Senator should not be supported because another had higher "name recognition" and a family history in government plus fund raising capabilities?

(30,247 posts)In your eyes it would be OK if he had died in the plane crash because he supported a candidate other than the one you liked?
Gee, please step away from the computer for a while and go out in the real world.

(17,573 posts)I'll admit, my first thought is of foul play related to the Inquirer buyout ... hopefully I just watch too much TV. That did sound like an ugly mess though.
My condolences to the families of all the deceased.

(9,884 posts)that people arrange deaths over newspapers these days.
And as a Philadelphian, I am sad to see this happen for other than human compassion reasons. I was actually hoping that the buyout would be a good thing for the Inquirer. I keep hoping that something that happens will be a good thing for that disappearing paper!

(17,573 posts)But still it was the first thought that occurred to me. Those involved in the dispute/deal are regional power players and from reports on the radio over the last few weeks it sounded like things had gotten ugly. Still, it doesn't seem very likely that it was other than an accident.
I also agree about the Inquirer. But it looks like Katz's son will be taking over his role so the newspaper should not be too severely affected. Whether they can make it viable again is a bigger question but that question was there anyway.

In the end we're all human. All the wealth in the world can't save us if we're going down in a plane or being shot at.
