King Juan Carlos of Spain has decided to abdicate, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced.
King Juan Carlos, who is 76, has ruled since 1975. His son Prince Felipe, 45, will take over the throne.
For much of his reign, Juan Carlos was seen as one of the world's most popular monarchs.
But recently many Spaniards have lost confidence in him, mainly because of a long-running corruption investigation into his daughter and her husband.

(3,813 posts)there was an attempted coup. the base was on lock down, I lived out in town,lucky I was on duty when it started. it was over in 24 hours, it failed, they kept the base locked down for 3 days.

(3,600 posts)When the coup happened in 1981 Juan Carlos said it would succeed only over his dead body. Several RW generals didn't join it for that reason, they could not oppose their king.
Prince Felipe, for a few years, actually did some work. He worked in the Inspector General's Office of the Spanish Navy under a man with a far more famous name Admiral Colon, a descendent of the famous Chris who got lost on the way to India.
