National Rifle Association blasts Texas’ open-carry protests as ‘dubious’ and ‘downright weird’
Source: Dallas Morning News
On Saturday about 150 open-carriers took their weapons to a North Richland Hills Home Depot parking lot for a gun-rights rally. Turns out, one day earlier the National Rifle Association more or less asked them not to do it.
A post on the NRAs Institute for Legislative Action website reiterates an earlier joint statement issued by Come and Take It Texas, Texas Carry, Gun Rights Across America and Open Carry Texas: Demonstrators bringing long guns into Chipotle and Chilis is really, really bad for business. And its starting to look weird. And its degenerating into downright foolishness.
Texas, says the post from the NRAs lobbying arm, is second to none for its robust gun culture. And thats great, says the NRA. Except in this instance.
A small number have recently crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness, says the post, which Mother Jones labels an extraordinary move for the organization. It goes on:

(24,979 posts)As dimwitted and extreme as they are, it's sunk in for them that they're starting to lose ground on the narrative even among gun owners. This is a sign that they are confused & desperate, the fuckers.
As post #3 below here says... These protests a) look like dangerous psychos even to middle America and b) are making corporations turn against the NRA. They can't think it would be good if Walmart or the like took a stand against their members' moron psycho actions.

(16,167 posts)All it's doing is making companies take a stand, and that usually means banning open carry in their establishments.
The NRA want's to keep the debate abstract, just like the republicans do with most issues.
The funny thing is that they created this monster and now it's going "off message".

(30,884 posts)Any thinking lobbyist recognizes the enormous potential for turning public opinion against them. Oops.
When for profit companies start feeling the impact from this 'abstract' perversion of the 2nd amendment, they are gonna DO something about it. I'm thinking the NRA is afraid of what the $$ from the other side will do. Americans want background checks and sensible laws in place - nada - politicians can ignore the poll numbers. They'll just lie about it to get the vote. What they want/need is the $$.
I agree it is a monster & now the nra is going to be dealing with it. People will see these idiots in grocery stores, hardware stores, restaurants & realize they've been fed a line of bull$hit from the gop. I mean really realize deep down how ludicrous and flimsy they're 'proclamations' of 'Merica and it's your Right. I'm hoping that thinking people will examine other platform positions & see them for what they are.

(3,547 posts)I don't really forsee a mass influx of cash from companies to pro-gun control groups. Just look at many of the press releases- they are very "wishy washy"- they won't "ban" guns from their stores- they just ask owners to leave them at home.
Politicians will ignore the poll results aslong as two conditions remain- gun policy remains a "low priority" in voters minds and those that do make it a priority are overwhelmingly pro-gun rights.

Then they pick sides, the sane side.
It's not always about lobby groups and money, this is where the rubber hits the road.

Fortunately California quickly passed a law banning open carrying weapons so they had no choice but to take their guns and their tiny penises and go home.

(17,493 posts)In some states which allow open carry, a number of gun owners have carried long guns into restaurants.
I see no realistic reason to do so. It is already legal to open carry in those states. Plus an AR-15 is a poor choice for self defense in a crowded urban area.
The only reason I can see is to irritate and intimidate those who personally do not wish to see firearms in public. Why would any responsible gun owner wish to do this?
Turbineguy
(37,208 posts)in a crowded place. Under their stand your ground law you can shoot innocent bystanders with impunity.

(17,493 posts)Any questionable case of self defense with a firearm that MIGHT involve "stand your ground" makes instant national attention.
While such incidents occur the ones that actually are not legitimate self defense but instead murder are few and far between. Also a person charged of murdering another individual will use any argument his lawyer suggests and that often includes a "stand your ground" defense. Usually this tactic fails in court and he is convicted.
However I do believe that the "stand your ground" law in Florida needs to be rewritten to correct some ambiguities in the wording that currently exist.

(6,785 posts)The best case scenario from their perspective is these asshats keep parading around annoying the shit out of everyone until the backlash gets strong enough to hurt the NRA. Worst case is one doesn't practice responsible trigger discipline and accidentally blasts a hole in somebody(s) and the backlash is instant and painful.
It's sort of like the Republicans distancing themselves from someone that said something openly racist. They believe it too, and they're fine with it, but they don't like the PR hit that comes with it.

(95,337 posts)I realize that it was not Home Depot that was sponsoring it but I do hope they speak out against it.
I know if I walked into my Home Depot and saw even one person not in a legit military uniform (wearing fatigues bought at an Army surplus store does NOT count) or Police Uniform I would have walked out right away.
There are no signs above the people carrying these guns that says 'I am well train to carry this gun and mentally sound' or 'I'm like George Zimmerman and will get trigger happy over the slightest sound or movement'. Shoppers should not have to go about their everday business in fear seeing these people open carry.
I know people joke about the 'small penis' but in the end it's low self-esteem. People who have been rejected by society who now want to get their revenge by creating fear around them and annoucing their so-called 'authority' by wearing their big guns. It's a joke.

Most gun owners want these idiots to just go away. There is no reason for someone to walk into a store with a loaded rifle over their back.

(37,726 posts)Sport shooters aren't too happy with the run-away gun and ammo prices these days and rim fire ammo is just about impossible to buy, even at today's scare driven, super inflated, prices. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind Big Wayne. The NRA wants to keep the Teabilly faithful scared to death, that "the democrats" are, "Going to come and TAKE all your guns away from you," The tremendous amounts of cash, that these NRA inspired gun scares generate, for the gun dealers, gun makers and the ammo industry, seems to have caused the NRA to become less stealthy about scaring the shit out of the already unstable individuals out there in FOXbot land. American blood being spilled, even the blood of our children at school, means nothing to the people behind the NRA/GOP, because "first they look at the purse." They "believe in the Almighty" alright, the almighty Dollar.
