NRA calls 'open carry' rallies 'downright weird'

HOUSTON (AP) - Companies, customers and others critical of Texas gun rights advocates who have brought military-style assault rifles into businesses as part of demonstrations supporting "open carry" gun rights now have a surprising ally: the National Rifle Association.

The advocates' actions in restaurants and other public places - part of a push for less restrictive gun laws, including legalizing the open carry of handguns - have prompted public criticism.

The NRA has long been a zealous advocate for gun owners' rights. But the group's lobbying arm, the Institute for Legislative Action, has called the demonstrations counterproductive to promoting gun rights, scary and "downright weird."

The NRA said the demonstrations have "crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness."

"Using guns merely to draw attention to yourself in public not only defies common sense, it shows a lack of consideration and manners. That's not the Texas way. And that's certainly not the NRA way," the NRA said in a statement posted on its website Friday.

The GOP created the Tea Party and lost control of them.

The NRA created the Open Carry Zealots and lost control of them.

What did the NRA expect? And they think the open carry law helps their case? Think about it. We've all met some strange people in our lives, right? Well, put a bunch of them in one place displaying guns. And of course, let it happen in a strong GOP state. The NRA said the demonstrations have "crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness." They opened the can of worms with their legislation, and now they have to deal with it. And this is the result. "Using guns merely to draw attention to yourself in public not only defies common sense, it shows a lack of consideration and manners". Common sense? Did they think all gun toting people have common sense? Think again. There will ALWAYS be exceptions to the rules.

My prediction: NOTHING will be done. The delusional ones still think Obama is out to get their guns.

That it's just a matter of time before there's an incident that will actually be significant enough to force control legislation.

The NRA doesn't give two fucks about gun rights. They are merely a group being used to make sure manufacturers can still sell guns.

This is just an example of business interests being protected.

Edited for spelling.

And they're setting up their "not my fault" in advance. These people are extremely violent, unstable, carrying highly dangerous weapons and looking to use them.

Guns are perfectly safe, right? So what are they upset about. What could possibly go wrong with 300 million Americans carrying guns everywhere they went at all times?
