Taliban video shows handover of US soldier

Source: AP-Excite

By RAHIM FAIEZ

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban on Wednesday released a video showing the handover of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to U.S. forces in eastern Afghanistan, touting the swap of the American soldier for five Taliban detainees from Guantanamo as a significant achievement for the insurgents.

The 17-minute video, emailed to media, shows the moment of Bergdahl's handover. He was freed on Saturday after five years in captivity, and exchanged for the five Guantanamo detainees who were flown to Qatar, a tiny Gulf Arab country which has served as a mediator in the negotiations for the swap.

Since his release, the 28-year-old from Hailey, Idaho, was reported to be in stable condition at a military hospital in Germany.

The Taliban video shows Bergdahl in traditional Afghan clothing, the white salwar kameez, clean-shaven and sitting in a white pickup truck parked on a hillside. More than a dozen Taliban fighters with machineguns, their faces mostly covered by headscarves, stand around the truck and on the hillside.

FULL story at link.

Thanks for posting the direct video. What was most fascinating was the handshake to the hostage takers and the white flag. It was literally one of the most compelling "handovers" I've ever seen. White flag, indicating no threat, hand shake to the two captors, respect. Then the final wave by one guy on the heli and thumbs up by another on the heli. Really fascinating human behavior.

Whoever put this exchange together is an amazing person or people. Amazing.

It was brief and quick.

I didn't point out the AK hidden inside the guys garments did I?

No, because that wasn't the fascinating part, that was the insecure part of the exchange. Both the pat down and the captor having an AK inside his garments. Those were not interesting to me because they weren't fascinating, they were expected behaviors to me.

It is sad you saw people afraid rather than caution but respect for one another.

Shit is always more complicated from a human perspective than all our dumb narratives can fathom.

who planned this had to be so very nervous, and it went off without a hitch. They did a terrific job.

Their celebration may only last until the drones find them.

Entire hill encamped with armed dudes. Armed dudes everywhere. Hell I have more respect for the rescuers now. They literally went into an ambush scenario.

but I have little doubt there was one or more armed aircraft and/or armed drones too high to be seen or heard, nearby in case the Taliban decided to start a firefight.

they were told there were a lot of back up teams surrounding the area. I'm sure the Taliban here was like a snake in the hand of a human - way more afraid of you than you are of it!
