Mississippi GOP Senate primary race too close to call, Ernst wins in Iowa
Source: Faux News
Six-term Mississippi GOP Sen. Thad Cochran and Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel were locked overnight in a too-close-to-call race for Cochrans Senate seat and appear headed for a runoff later this month.
McDaniel had nudged ahead of Cochran early Wednesday, with 98 percent of the state's precincts reporting. McDaniel garnered 49.6 percent of the vote to Cochran's 48.8 percent.
One candidate would have needed 50 percent of the vote to win outright and avoid the June 24 runoff. The third GOP candidate, Thomas Carey, had 2 percent of the vote.
Mississippi was just one of six states Tuesday holding Senate primaries, with Iowas GOP race considered the other closely-contested contest.

(14,449 posts)The next 3 weeks is going to be a rumble in Mississippi. Funny that they think that the winner of the run off is the next Senator of Mississippi....as if the Democrat doesn't have a chance....that is pretty rude.

(24,692 posts)shot at winning the Senate seat in Mississippi if McDaniel wins the GOP nomination.
They really want a McDaniel win because they want a head on the mantel, party strategist Ford OConnell said. Tea party groups need to be able to raise money to stay afloat, he added, and to raise money, you have to show results.
McDaniel, 41, ran as a constitutional conservative committed to reining in spending and opposing the federal health-care law. But he has made controversial comments that have raised GOP fears that he could put a safely Republican seat at risk in the general election against former congressman Travis Childers, a capable Democratic recruit. McDaniel has wavered on Hurricane Katrina relief and blamed hip-hop culture for gun violence in Canada. Some Republican strategists fear such remarks could alienate centrists.
Hell immediately have to figure out a way to appeal to mainstream voters and beat back the partisan attacks by the other side, said Republican strategist Ron Bonjean, referring to conservative candidates who imploded in recent years. Hopefully he will have learned the lessons of why Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock and Sharron Angle failed.

(130,876 posts)the National Republican Senate Committee reiterated its support for Mr. Cochran, saying, We look forward to him emerging victorious in the runoff. But the big question that now hangs over the next three weeks will be just how much money the Committee is willing to put behind Mr. Cochran, and whether national Republicans and establishment-aligned groups go back on the air in Mississippi on Mr. Cochrans behalf.
Among Mr. McDaniels supporters, the best financed of the outside conservative groups, the Club for Growth, indicated Wednesday that they would continue to help the challenger in a runoff. Chris Chocola, the groups president, pledged to vigorously pursue this race to its conclusion, and we will look forward to the election of Senator Chris McDaniel.'
