Dem leader assails GOP over soldier swap

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Democrat in the Senate is accusing Republicans of trying to score political points with their criticism of President Barack Obama over the swap of an American solider for five members of the Taliban held at Guantanamo.

Majority Leader Harry Reid on Wednesday read aloud past statements from Senate Republicans who had said no member of the armed forces should be left behind. Reid criticized the senators for now denouncing the exchange of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for the five detainees.

Reid said questions regarding Bergdahl’s disappearance should be addressed by the Army, not the “Monday morning quarterbacks” on Capitol Hill.

He said the alternative to the swap would have been to leave Bergdahl with the Taliban. He asserted that America is glad Bergdahl is free.

scroll down the front page, looking on the right side of the page for the segment titled "From the Wires". Under that title you will see four sections listed, "All - Politics - Entertainment - Life," click on the "Politics" section and AP reports on politics will appear. At this moment the article Dem leader assails GOP over soldier swap is third from the top, click on it and the AP article will appear. If that isn't sufficient for you, Google the title of the article, I'm certain an acceptable to you source will be provided, e.g., ABC News, AZStarNet, The Press of Atlantic City and man more...all publications printing the identical AP story.

"By DONNA CASSATA
Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Democrat in the Senate on Wednesday accused Republicans of trying to score political points with their criticism of President Barack Obama over the swap of an American solider for five members of the Taliban held at Guantanamo.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Harry Reid read aloud past statements from Senate Republicans who had said no member of the armed forces should be left behind and then challenged the GOP for now denouncing the exchange of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for the five detainees.

"The safe return of an American soldier should not be used for political points," Reid said. "When a man or woman puts on the uniform as a United States servicemen, they have America's uncompromising support."

Reid said questions regarding Bergdahl's disappearance should be addressed by the Army, not the "Monday morning quarterbacks" on Capitol Hill"......... article continues at many websites who buy AP news. Associated Press

Though all seem to have used the same AP "headline" You did leave out some and change a bit.

No worries, it's no big deal. I like reading AP stories complete, that's why I asked for the link to the AP story. I found the entire story by searching the headline.

IMO in latest breaking news the source should match the link.

The 'story' should link to the entire AP story if it is AP material. Not just a couple of out of sequence paragraphs with no link provided to the original entire story.

It's really no big deal. I've learned to search the headline (which is not changed from the AP writers story) and find the entire story myself. Plenty of other medias use the entire AP story.

p/s and edited to place in..when that "Dem leader" speaks he usually hits the nail right on the head.

We, as Americans, do not leave our soldiers on the battlefield. NYT has an article "Can Bergdahl be tied to 6-8 deaths" - I would like to ask "can Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld and rice be tied to 6-8 deaths"? - I am disgusted by those who would malign our soldiers....my two brothers came home - many didn't...Viet Nam, another war without meaning...

It apparently wasn't even worth quoting at length. The only quotation was the "Monday morning quarterback" part which to me seems extremely mild under the circumstances.

He can never seem to have focused, point-by-point, hard-hitting language, that gets picked up by someone other than Salon and that gets repeated over and over and has real impact on hoi polloi.

"Whatever the results of the military's inquiries, it doesn't change the fact that one more American solider is home safe. What was the alternative? Would any American honestly prefer that a U.S. soldier remain in captivity until all the questions have been answered?" Reid asked. "Of course not. In the United States, we rescue our soldiers first and ask questions later."

Why start out with "whatever the results of the military's inquiries"?

Why include weak third person language like "it doesn't change the fact that"?

Here:

"We brought home another American soldier."

(Note: "We" language, as if Reid represents all of Americans, instead of the bullshit, shill language up above.)

"Anyone who has a problem with that is dishonoring our men and women in uniform."

(Note: Warning out there for "anyone" but we all make the immediate jump to the Republicans. Also, turn it around on them (for just once) and show how they are the ones doing wrong by America and Americans.)

Or maybe this:

"You out there lying about our efforts -- and the rescuers' risking their lives -- do a disservice to America."

(Note: Now you have some real emotion, some real strength. If you could get that POS to go this far, he'd be talked about as a candidate for President.)

"We will sort it all out in due time."

(Note: If he's a deserter, then any heat for rescuing him will be faded in the long run. Scare them away from trying to use his alleged desertion to fuck up what should be a victory.)

Now, if that warm pile of goo called Harry Reid could come up with something like this, the world would be a better place (and I'm not really exaggerating). But he is such a weak POS that we have to suffer.

while they are playing chess and criticize ever move the players make, but never have the balls to sit at the table and play the game. If Obama had not made the prisoner switch, the guy would have died and the GOP would be complaining that he let an American solider die unnecessarily.

But you never heard any of them criticize GWB or his puppeteer Cheney and they are responsible for the entire mess.

Then a court martial will determine that in due time and after due process.

In the meantime, he's a United States soldier and should receive the respect and consideration that is due to any other soldier. The concept of leaving no soldier behind is no predicated on whether or not the talking heads at Fox News deem him sufficiently worthy. We don't leave them behind. Period.

Even if Bergdahl is guilty of something, we damned sure don't outsource our justice to the Taliban. If he serves time in prison, it's going to be an American prison and not rotting in the hands of our enemies.

Republicans despise this country...

When one gets in the way, they make up/find dirt about him/her.

A co-worker asked me for a ride home during the Kerry /Bush election. On the way home, he blurted out something like, "Looks like we'll have a lying Democrat who pretends he fought in a war for president." (This was the point where Kerry looked like he was going to win it).

I'm guessing he thought I was on his nutty side of politics and was frustrated, because he didn't mention anything else. I let it go, but didn't offer him anymore rides.
