Officials in Bergdahl's Hometown: Stop the Hate
Source: NBC News

In Hailey, Idaho, the hometown of freed U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, the joy at his release has turned for some into shock and fear the fear of picking up the phone.
That's because some town officials have been deluged with angry calls from people who think that Bergdahl is an Army deserter or traitor who doesn't deserve a hero's welcome.
Jane Drussel, the president of the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, has been fielding dozens of angry calls.
"Well, (I feel) disappointment number one, just absolutely total surprise at how bad some of them are," she told NBC News on Tuesday.

(111,241 posts)and I find that a glaring omission. Some people say he deserted. Some people say he was captured. The truth is that we really don't know what happened to him at this point except that he was a prisoner for a very unpleasant length of time.

(9,688 posts)It's a culture that reigns almost supreme on DU as targeted at an ever renewed stream of chosen victims, and at that DU averages normal, IMO, as compared to e.g. "comments" sections at Wash Post etc. It's a culture that invents "sides" on FUCKING EVERYTHING, then tags those "sides" with meaningless buzzwords.

(15,189 posts)And he was right. We were told we went into Afghanistan for Osama for 9/11. If that's the case, then why didn't the FBI list 9/11 on Osama's wanted poster? Questions we'll never get answers for. The war in Afghanistan reminds me of the movie Caddyshack. Blowing up the golf course for one gopher.

(11,495 posts)Some of the right wing trolls are posting that his home town canceled the event they were going to have because they all think he is a traitor! It was canceled because of all the hate from the right wing morons that are pushing this meme even though there has been no charge filed, or any kind of real investigation. These right wing morons simply pick up the hate from the talking heads on fox news, spew their hate. It makes me sick!

(53,661 posts)Who is Bowe Bergdahl? - Life of the U.S. Soldier captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Uploaded on Jul 22, 2009
HAILEY, Idaho - We are learning more about Bowe Bergdahl, the 23-year-old American soldier being held by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Since news of his capture was made public over the weekend, his friends in the Sun Valley, Idaho town of Hailey, have told ABC us that Bowe worked at a coffee house for a couple years, liked to ride his bicycle around town and had taken a class at the Sun Valley School of Ballet.
His family, concerned media descriptions of Bowe were limited to "bike riding, ballet dancing, barista," released more details about the life of their son Tuesday, through Walt Femling, the Sheriff of Blaine County, Idaho.
Sheriff Femling, who is a longtime friend of the Bergdahl family, called Bowe an adventurer. He said Bowe loves to ride both bicycles and motorcycles, but not cars. "He didn't like cars so he rode his bike everywhere," said Sheriff Femling.
He recounted how Bowe crewed a sailboat to the Caribbean and a fishing boat in Alaska. He toured Europe and California. "Not bad for somebody who is only 23 years old." He continued, "It's these adventures and others that made Bowe a very well-rounded person and I'm glad to know him." The Sheriff believes that Bowe's adventurous spirit played a part in his decision to join the military.
Bowe was good at handling guns and familiar with martial arts, and yet Sheriff Femling told us he was also a kind and courteous young man, "He would call you 'sir' or 'ma'am' and you know, to get a 23 year old these days to call you that is a little unusual."
As for education, Bowe was home schooled, but Sheriff Femling noted that he did receive his GED through The College of Southern Idaho.
Even though townsfolk had set up a fund for the Bergdahl family at a bank in Hailey, the Sheriff said the family discourages contributions. He explained that's not the focus of the family; they want prayers right now, not money. What's more, they ask everyone to pray not just for Bowe, but also for all of the men and women of the armed forces who find themselves in harm's way.
Of course hate doesn't need to hear the truth, does it?

Bring Bowe Back/Bowe Is Back Event Cancelled
(Hailey, Idaho)
Hailey community members who worked during March and April of this year to organize their annual Bring Bowe Back event in Hailey have asked to cancel the event.
When the news of Bowe Bergdahls release was announced this past Saturday, the organizers joyfully declared that the event would be renamed Bowe is Back, and would become a celebration of family and friends being reunited with their son who was had been held captive in Afganistan for five years. In the past, the event had been a celebration of support to the family through these many years.
National media attention on Hailey and this event has led many across the nation to believe that the event is intended to be a military parade. There is broad interest in this topic, as evidenced by the approximate 100 correspondences per day received by the City of Hailey this week. The organizers and Hailey expect a significant increase in attendance to this event, by people who both want to support or protest against it.
In the interest of public safety, the event will be cancelled. Hailey, a town of 8,000, does not have the infrastructure to support an event of the size this could become.

(8,694 posts)near Landstuhl and far, far away from the disgusting venom. He is still "too fragile" to even unite with his family, according to sources. This is Wednesday, and he was found Saturday, and still too fragile to unite with the people who love him most. I have serious concerns about his condition, especially after seeing the video. He was walking with a wobbly gait like those who have one shorter leg, stumbled a couple times. The blinking and rubbing his eyes like he hadn't seen sunlight in a while.

(377 posts)I have known the Bergdahl's casually since Bowe was about 5 years old. I have never heard anyone say anything unkind about him, he and his family still have the support of our community. He was home schooled, has a GED, my neighbor was his tutor for that.
Something I have given some thought to: the main organizers of the Bowe events are right wing Obama haters. It is some kind of karma to see that right wing hatred directed at them. Maybe they will realize that they have been supporting the party of lies and hatred. I think the Bergdahls have been Ron Paul supporters.

(7,286 posts)While Fox news was trying to portray the father as a Muslim because of his beard, I heard a radio caller claim he was actually "a very religious Christian" do you know if this is true?
Not that his religion matters, just considering the irony there....

(377 posts)At least that is what they were when we first met. I met them through an evangelical Christian friend of mine when Bowe was just a toddler. That friend moved away and I have only seen them rarely for many years so don't know current religious views. Their apparent spokesperson is a right wing conservative Christian.
