Co-founder of Burt's Bees says he was ousted

Source: AP-Excite

By DAVID SHARP

PARKMAN, Maine (AP) — Conventional wisdom suggests the Burt behind Burt's Bees left the company after he became disillusioned with the corporate world in North Carolina and wanted to return to his solitary life in Maine.

The reality, Burt Shavitz says, is that he was forced out by co-founder Roxanne Quimby after he had an affair with an employee.

So the man on the Burt's Bees logo that promises "Earth-friendly natural personal care products" ended up with 37 acres in Maine, and an undisclosed sum of money.

And he's not complaining.

FULL story at link.

3. & the quality of the products has gone down

I used to buy their milk and shea butter body wash and use it as hand soap. One of the things I loved most about it was the smell of it. Then the Company changed the look of its labels and that same product smelled "different", and sure enough, the ingredients had been changed. I'm going to assume those changes took place during the period of time where the above change in the company happened.

I've since started using Dr. Bronner's products. Really miss that great smelling OLD Burt's Bees body wash, though.

5. The quality of the Burt's Bees products are deteriorating very quickly.

I used the Peach & Willow Bark Facial Scrub for years and the most recent tube has had a pretty big change in the ingredients and quality. The odor is now very odd and strangely chemical smelling. It feels really slimy, too. Whatever changes made have made the product unacceptable and is irritating to my skin.

Some corporate schmuck must have gotten a big pay raise for substituting some cheaper chemical ingredients saying the customers will never notice. Wrong!

6. Totally agree

That was my complaint (see my comment above). The scent of the milk and shea butter body wash smelled like chemicals and felt different and sure enough, the ingredient list had changed when the picture on the label changed.

Ugh... too bad.

9. My experience mirrored yours.

The people I feel sorry for are the workers in their manufacturing facilities. They are the ones hurt when Burt's customers stop buying their products. I wish I did not have to do the effort to find another product that works. This summer I am going to use fresh herbs from my garden to make my face wash. The chamomile is just coming into bloom now! I am going to pick some mint and chamomile blossoms to make an infusion this morning. I think I can make enough to last about a week at a time.

I did call their 800 number on the package and got my money back, so if you still have the stuff sitting around call them and ask for a refund. Nothing hurts a corporation like having to refund money for their substandard products. If enough people did it, it might have an impact.

I will look into the Bronner's products.

7. I knew they had been bought out some years ago,

and according to Wikipedia, that would be Clorox:

In late 2007, Clorox purchased Burt's Bees for a reported sum of $925,000,000 USD.

So, there's the likelihood that corners have been cut, and artificially-produced chemicals used in place of natural ingredients.

10. I wonder if they are importing a bunch of cut rate ingredients from China.

There was some information in the news awhile back about China exporting tons of low quality and/or adulterated honey to the world market.

That is a lot of money for the company. The MBAs are going to cut a lot of corners to pay that off.

Since the packaging changes, the ingredients list on the packages show a lot of the same ingredients found in the much cheaper corresponding consumer products. They have cheapened the product to where it is nearly the same as the much cheaper stuff while charging a premium price.

It was really only a matter of time before Clorox ruined the brand.

13. I'm sure they use the lowest quality they can get away with.

Quantity sold is far more important than quality any day (for big corporations.)

The only Burt's Bees product I use is their essential-oil deodorant. I could probably just make my own if I knew the ratios of denatured alcohol to the three oils in the ingredients list. I may have to look that up and just do that when this bottle runs out...

8. If there's one thing I noticed - once products go corporate, the quality goes down.

Seems to happen every time too.

Burt's Bees
Tom's of Maine
Snapple

11. I had a very severe reaction to a Tom's product just this spring.

Benadryl saved me from the emergency room. I had never purchased a Tom's product until this one time and it will be the last. Wow, it was really bad. I will never buy anything from them again, either.

Corporate takeovers are never a positive for the consumer.

12. FYI. Check your deodorants and antiperspirants for Triclosan.

After my allergic reaction to Tom's I started checking ingredients on everything in the house and discovered some of the deodorants had Triclosan in them! Talk about overkill. I called the company(not Tom's) and they said it was removed as of 1/1/2014, but they were not required to remove stock from the store shelves, so you might still find some product with it.

15. Plug for another company

We buy from this company- it's a mother and daughter team that runs a small farm. Best part, hands down: when you order from them, the owner sends you an email, and will give you updates (not autosend, she really writes each one individually) on the weather, how the ponies are doing (they adopted some tiny horses that just roam around), etc. You'll actually get to "know" them. My wife actually emailed her to ask about "Beaker, the Canada Goose" that moved in with them for awhile. (Beaker flew off with a gaggle)

he's probably happy to be done with them. no wonder he's not complaining.

i've bought burt's bees products in the past, but now i only buy my lotions, etc. from desert dancer, a locally owned shop in cottonwood, arizona. they make and mix their own products - their ADE lotion is to die for! it's the only thing that keeps my very dry skin moist, but not greasy. a big plus is that it comes unscented, or you can choose your own scent from many different ones that they have. i love the china rain, mmm.
