Gov. Mary Fallin signs Oklahoma Common Core ban
Oklahoma becomes the next state to withdraw from Common Core standards, blaming "Washington bureaucrats" for overreach.
By Gabrielle Levy
WASHINGTON, June 6 (UPI) --Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has signed legislation repealing the state's participation in the Common Core standards in favor of crafting their own.
"We are capable of developing our own Oklahoma academic standards that will be better than Common Core," Fallin said.
Fallin said Common Core, which had been intended to level the playing field for students nationwide, had been "usurped" by "President Obama and Washington bureaucrats... in an attempt to influence state education standards."
"The results are predictable," she said at the National Governors Association in January. "What should have been a bipartisan policy is now widely regarded as the president's plan to establish federal control of curricula, testing and teaching standards."
Fallin had been in favor of the adoption of Common Core, but in recent months had been bombarded with calls and letters urging her to sign legislation repealing the standards.

(7,759 posts)the standards of an educational system I grew up with 60 years ago. While the math processes seem a bit ridiculous for us old-timers the standards for reading, writing, and thinking and logic seem reasonable to me but only if you want a well educated citizenry.

(10,952 posts)Believe it or not, the Republican dominated state legislature passed a bill that would allow state employees to cash in up to 200 hours of annual year (max 100 hours every 6 months). The genesis of the bill was the Dept. of Correction Correctional Officers, a job class that is constantly understaffed and requiring officers to typically work 60 hours a week which makes it near to impossible to take any annual leave. They do not qualify for over time pay but to qualify for comp time. Well, if you can't schedule annual leave you are not going to be able to schedule comp time. On the positive side, if comp time is not taken within 6 months after it is earned, at that time the employee gets the pay at time and a half. They just have to wait 6 months to get the pay for that overtime. I imagine that after 6 months they are probably getting what I would then call delayed time and a half on a rolling basis. That does resolve the comp time making the employee wait for the pay but the state caps annual leave and when an employee hits that ceiling, they start to lose their annual leave. This bill was to try to bring some relief to correctional workers who are working in a high risk environment due to the shortfall in staffing.
Yup you bet it, Fallin vetoed the bill. Correctional workers in Oklahoma are working pretty darn close to slave labor. I don't know why on earth anybody would want to be a correctional officer in this state.

(6,241 posts)If there are even less correctional officers employed, the lawsuits from prisioners would force the state to change policies to attract qualified applicants. Nothing is going to change without force. Having no one show up for work would accomplish that.

(10,952 posts)privatization does tot result in saving tax dollars. Private companies exist to make a profit not to run a formerly state run entity for the goodness of their heart. We have consultants that are awarded contracts for federal and/or state financed projects. Not all consultants complete their work with the due diligence they should because they rely upon state workers to fix their mistakes while still getting paid for inferior work. It would probably cost taxpayers less money to have state workers generate the plans in the first place.
