What's next in the GM recall case

Source: AP-Excite

General Motors on Thursday released the results of an internal investigation into the delayed recall of 2.6 million cars with faulty ignition switches. But the 315-page report doesn't bring the issue to a close. Here's what's still to come in the ongoing recall case:

— CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION: The U.S. Justice Department is investigating GM's conduct and may bring criminal charges. GM's case is being investigated by the same team that got Toyota to agree to a $1.2 billion penalty for hiding unintended acceleration problems. That investigation lasted four years. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is also investigating whether GM took too long to tell investors about the defective switches.

— CONGRESSIONAL ACTION: Two congressional subcommittees promised to call GM CEO Mary Barra back to Washington for further hearings after GM released its report. At hearings in April, Barra repeatedly said she couldn't answer questions because the internal investigation wasn't finished.

— COMPENSATION: GM has hired compensation expert Kenneth Feinberg to determine how to compensate victims' families. Feinberg said last week that he hasn't yet settled any cases and is waiting for GM to decide on its options.

GM is recalling:

• 57,512 model year 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light duty pickups, 2015 Silverado and Sierra heavy duty pickups, '15 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban SUVs and '15 Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs for a problem with the base radio.

The radio might not emit an audible warning when the key is in the ignition and the driver's door is open. It also might not sound the chime to alert the driver of an unbuckled seatbelt. GM said in a statement that it is unaware of any related injuries and said dealers will reprogram the radio control module.

• 31,520 model year 2012 Buick Verano, Chevy Camaro, Cruze and Sonic cars for a potential problem that could prevent the airbag from deploying.

• 61 Chevy Spark minicars from the 2013 and 2014 model years and 2013 Buick Encores for a condition that could prevent the passenger airbag from deploying properly. The company said it wasn't aware of any related crashes.

• 33 model year 2014 Chevrolet Corvettes for a short circuit in the sensing and diagnostic module that could disable the front airbags. GM said it doesn't know of any related crashes.

The campaigns increase GM's total for 2014 to 34 recalls covering 13.9 million U.S. vehicles and 15.9 million in North America. The total double counts some vehicles that have been recalled more than once.

2. my work car

is a 2006 Saturn ion 3 ...
its been sitting in my driveway motionless since around Christmas when the power steering decided to just start cutting out randomly as I was going down the road...

Before that tho, id say in 2008, I had to replace the ignition and key TWICE to a total of around 800 bucks after labor (had it done at the dealership)..
and even back then they admitted to me they knew about the problem and there was no fix.. that every time I came and had them 'fix it' they were just putting a new part of the same flawed version in and to expect it to fail eventually...
mine reacted differently than what im hearing people today complain of tho.. most people saying their car shuts off when riding down the road..
mine would get stuck in the ON position and I wouldn't be able to turn the car off (via the keys)...

So now im waiting in line for the ignition switch/key fix...
and im told they are aware of the power steering problem but get this.. NO FIX YET! apparently im supposed to just keep driving my car and hope im not going 60mph when the power steering stops.. lmao...

so no car for me until they get this worked out..

the amount of money and time they are costing me is outrageous.. and im sure ill never be compensated whatsoever

My 09 Cobalt power steering (electric) was replaced a couple years ago. Yours must be different.

a reimbursement form for the previous repairs to the ignition.. but I no longer have any proof of it as it was 6 years ago (have a different bank and all).. but whenever they call me in to get it replaced, was going to see if they still had record of it on their computers

frankly tho im more ticked off about the fact I cant use my car without elevated risk to my life, indefinitely, than about the previous repairs
