Mad Cow Disease Kills in Texas (fourth U.S. victim)
Source: NatureWorld News
Mad cow disease has claimed its fourth victim ever in the United States after affecting a resident of Texas, officials report. The Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) announced this week that laboratory testing conducted in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that a man who died last month of an unknown illness had died of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) - the human form of mad cow disease.
In a statement on Tuesday, the CDC pointed out that it's likely that this is an isolated case of the disease, and poses no threat to the general populous.

The disease tends to take 13 months to progress, but as there is no cure for it, the inevitable neurodegredation caused by the disease always proves fatal.

In the article the CDC is claiming the cases are all related to travel outside the U.S.
No doubt the United States beef industry would agree with their assessment, especially ahead of the summer barbecue season.

(182,271 posts)I was a regular blood donator until in about 2006 I answer "Yes" to "Have you lived in Europe for more than 3 months since 1980?"
Since then they will not take my blood (Virginia Blood Services - Red Cross).
I called a year ago to see if they would now accept it and the answer is still NO. They said that the number of people who have been deployed overseas recently is a real problem for them. Some can give but some can't.

(10,291 posts)I came to the US from England in 1999, having grew up there. Until Mad Cow Disease really hit, I have donated blood once... then got banned.
If I wanted to return to England and donate, I can't because of some of the stuff in American food, probably the antibiotics that cattle get injected into them. Though if I returned for a longer period I could donate again.

(22,651 posts)That is scary, given how easy it is for slaughterhouses to slip in 'downer cows' and other condemned cattle.
And how easy it is for meat wholesalers to switch other cheap crappy meats for 'beef'.
