Poroshenko sworn in as Ukraine's president

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's new president on Saturday called for dialogue with the country's east, gripped by a violent separatist insurgency, and for armed groups to lay down their weapons but said he won't talk with rebels he called "gangsters and killers."

Petro Poroshenko's inaugural address after taking the oath of office in parliament gave little sign of a quick resolution to the conflict in the east, which Ukrainian officials say has left more than 200 people dead.

He also took a firm line on Russia's annexation of Crimea this spring, insisting that the Black Sea peninsula "was, is and will be Ukrainian." He gave no indication of how Ukraine could regain control of Crimea, which Russian President Vladimir Putin has said was allotted to Ukraine unjustly under Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

Hours after the speech, Putin ordered security tightened along Russia's border with Ukraine to prevent illegal crossings, Russian news agencies said. Ukraine claims that many of the insurgents in the east have come from Russia; Poroshenko on Saturday said he would offer a corridor for safe passage of "Russian militants" out of the country.

At least he is democratically elected unlike the self-appointed "leaders" in the east. He is saying the right things, let's see if he can carry that out.

But he will still have to do what the IMF and the CIA tell him to do. He has to have the former's money, and he has to have the latter's private contractor mercenaries.

you need one to take another one down.

similar to Hitler there was Stalin. Neither good but one took out the other that planned to dominated everyone. Which is what Palin. ahem uh Putin plans to do or thinks he is. heard from one russian who simply says Putin is afraid he'll lose this Oligarchy , though she is pro Crimea = Russia she's never been a fan of Putin

although another Russian I know who lives just to the east of Crimea when I asked what he thought of Putin he sent me a gif that slowly dressed Putin up as a girl and she started dancing So if your in Moscow Crimea is Russia if you live near Crimea meah Putin's a girl . At least some Russians still have a sense of humor

4. Ukraine protesters vow to keep Kiev tent city

KIEV, Ukraine — They had already broken down their dusty khaki tent, and now, the three fresh-faced young men and their two middle-aged comrades were dismantling the wood-and-tire barriers that had guarded it.

It was the first tent to come down in the military-style protesters' camp on fashionable Kreshatik Street — Kiev's Rodeo Drive — since Ukrainians elected their new president, Petro Poroshenko, whose inauguration is set for Saturday.

Ninety-nine percent of Kiev residents would have cheered the dismantling, hoping it heralded the imminent disappearance of the entire tent city, according to Serhiy Solodky, deputy director of the Kiev-based Institute for World Policy.

The makeshift city dates back to when some of the hundreds of thousands of protesters who engineered the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovich in February erected tents and wooden shelters along Kreshatiak and adjoining Maidan Square to dissuade Yanukovich's pro-Russian supporters from trying to retake the area.

5. German FM urges Ukraine caution in military action

BERLIN: German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Ukraine's government Saturday to exercise caution in using military force against pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the country.

"The result of military operations in eastern Ukraine must not be to give more impetus to the separatists," Steinmeier told Tagesspiegel am Sonntag newspaper in extracts released on Saturday, the same day a new president was inaugurated in Kiev.

In such a tense situation, he added, it would be "smart to be cautious in the deployment of military force and have a sense of proportion".

Steinmeier also said Russia's behaviour in the conflict had "noticeably changed", a comment that appeared to strike a new tone in emphasising the importance of both Kiev and Moscow taking responsibility for a de-escalation.

6. Ukraine's Poroshenko pledges to retake Crimea

Ukraine's newly elected president has pledged to retake Crimea and said he would not back down in seeking closer ties with Europe during his inaugural speech today.

Petro Poroshenko, a 48-year-old billionaire, made his address shortly after being sworn into office in front of parliament and foreign guests including US Vice President Joe Biden and senior European Union officials, according to Reuters.

"There can be no trade-off about Crimea and about the European choice and about the governmental system," Poroshenko said. "All other things can be negotiated and discussed at the negotiation table. Any attempts at internal or external enslavement of Ukraine will meet with resolute resistance."

No mention was made on how Ukraine planned to reclaim the Black Sea peninsula that is home to the strategic naval base of Sevastopol.
