'Guccifer' Hacker Who Leaked Bush Paintings Is Sentenced to Jail

A Romanian court sentenced hacker "Guccifer," who broke into the emails of former U.S. president George W. Bush's family, entertainment figures and the head of the Romanian secret service, to four years in jail on Friday.

Marcel Lazar Lehel, a cab driver by trade and known by his aliases "Guccifer" and "Small Fume," was arrested in January in Bucharest and could spend a total of seven years behind bars as he also carries a previous three-year suspended sentence.

Guccifer shot to fame in 2013 after he hacked into the Bush family emails and posted artwork by the former president, including self-portraits in the bathtub. The same year, the hacker distributed emotional emails sent to former U.S. secretary of state Colin Powell from European Parliament member Corina Cretu, a Romanian, prompting Powell to deny that they had an affair.

Guccifer also broke into a private Yahoo email account of Romania's secret service chief George Maior, which his agency said had been used before for academic correspondence.

But it was a Romanian court that convicted him, probably because he hacked the email of the head of their secret service.

'You were my greatest love of my life': Deeply personal emails sent between Colin Powell and a blonde Romanian diplomat revealed by hacker but he DENIES having an affair
The 76-year-old former secretary of state said he met Corina Cretu, a 45-year-old member of the European Parliament, 10 years ago
He said they began emailing each other in 2005 and 'the emails became of a very personal nature but did not result in an affair'
Photos reportedly sent to Powell have emerged - one in her bikini
Powell was forced to address his relationship with Cretu when notorious hacker 'Guccifer' posted some of their emails online
In the emails, Cretu describes Powell as 'the love of her life' according to The Smoking Gun
Powell has been married for 50 years to his wife, Alma, and Cretu was married last year

This is one guy who broke into three emails and got dirt on Colin Powell. NSA knows about every affair and peccadillo of every single member of our government and courts. That means they are using information to gain leverage over these individuals forcing them to do what they want.

I just don't think there's any unringing of the bell, here.

The horse is well clear of the barn.

If you store it online, if you've typed it online, if you indulge in any sort of transmission that goes out over the air, expect that someone might look at it or listen to it outside of your intended recipient.

I've always not had an expectation of privacy in this regard. We pay these putzes to deliver our emails and facilitate our phone calls, but we don't pay them enough for loyalty or privacy. We're just suckers who contribute to their bottom line, while they provide us with a convenient--but not entirely private--form of communication.

much like the reporter of this news story. Snowden is the one that stole the information from the NSA but he did so because in his (and my) opinion, the NSA got the information illegally.

There is no comparison between exposing someone's affair from illegally read emails and exposing the NSA for spying on Americans.

If he were "simply reporting" he would do a dump and put it all out there.

Instead, he's keeping the pile of goodies, and handing it out in dribs and drabs, so he can make money off of it. He's treating national security material like a soap opera. Tune in tomorrow, to GG's Tastes of the NSA!! We give you a small bite, and leave you wanting more!!

He's monetized the stuff that Snowden stole and that he's fencing.

They just had a succinct assessment. The lead source was CRYPTOME, followed by SMOKING GUN, and they are a source that is "document based."

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/colin-powell-guccifer-email-hack-594321

While TSG did not mention Cretu (seen above) by name or refer to a possible romance, Powell’s swift denial of an affair--especially one possibly conducted with an official of a foreign government while he served as America’s chief diplomat--was clearly prompted by the sensitive nature of the e-mails sent to his personal AOL account. And likely by a desire on Powell’s part to address any appearance of impropriety, especially in light of last year’s crash-and-burn by retired General David Petraeus.

In the “very personal” correspondence cited by Powell, Cretu calls him the love of her life and describes a relationship that spanned more than a decade. The 2010-2011 e-mails would leave most readers with the clear impression that the forlorn Cretu is writing about the twilight of a lengthy romance.

As reported here in March, Powell’s e-mail and Facebook accounts were illegally accessed by “Guccifer,” the hacker who has spent the last eight months breaking into the online accounts of Clinton, Bush, and Obama administration officials; former FBI agents; defense contractors; Bush family members and friends; and assorted public figures, including journalist Carl Bernstein, author Candace Bushnell, and John Doerr, the billionaire venture capitalist.

Immediately after the Powell hacks, “Guccifer” sent some of the pilfered e-mails and photos to a variety of news outlets (and the anti-secrecy site cryptome.org, which posted the material).

And you can be sure that Obama has and had a pretty clean background or he would not have thrown his hat in the ring. Had Powell run for President I am certain that one his GOP colleagues would have leaked this all over the media.

try and dig up that press conference.
I dont expect I'll ever find it, but I remember it.
they can disappear dirt like that effortlessly.
but any little detail they wish to use against the "enemy"
remains vital and viable.

this seems to capture the spirit of the time, before the lineup rolled out their no way Colin event.
