Shooters in Metro Ambush That Left 5 Dead Spoke of White Supremacy and Desire to Kill Police
Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal
Two Las Vegas police officers were killed Sunday in what appears to be a politically motivated ambush in a pizza restaurant that spilled over to a nearby Wal-Mart, where the two shooters committed suicide after killing a woman in the store.
Details are sketchy but Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sources close to the investigation say the shooters shouted that this is the start of a revolution before opening fire on the officers, and draped their bodies with cloth showing a Revolutionary War-era flag. Investigators have also found paraphernalia associated with white supremacists.
Sunday night Metro homicide investigators and FBI agents cordoned off and were searching a small apartment complex at 110 S. Bruce St., about four miles from the shooting scene. A resident of the complex said he had spoken with a man who lived in the apartment being searched. He said the man appeared militant, and often talked about conspiracy theories.
<snip>
The shooters then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and badges, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. They then covered the officers with something that featured the Gadsden flag, a yellow banner with a coiled snake above the words, Dont tread on Me.
The flag is named for Christopher Gadsden a Revolutionary War general who designed it. It has recently come back in vogue as an adopted symbol of the American tea party movement.

I remember reading a thread where someone asked what was the best town in Texas to work. A bunch said not to work in Austin because the town is over-run by libruls, even while admitting that the pay and benefits were better.
Never seemed to dawn on them that it is better because the town is run by "liberals".
PS - Austin's city council is mostly center right, including the mayor.

(18,581 posts)Think about the planning that went into this act. They go to a restaurant, shoot a couple cops they seemed to know were there, then after taking their weapons, they go to a WalMart and shoot someone else.
What was the next phase of their plan? Did they think the US government would fall at their feet and let them take over after that? If mutual suicide was their plan all along, what do they hope that would achieve? They will soon be forgotten after next week's mass shooting.
What's wrong with people these days?

(19,458 posts)Stupid people are so easily brainwashed by the media. If you had the stomach to endure 24/7 of the inciting and inflammatory rhetoric that flows from the RW media, and the internet, and you were basically stupid and sheltered, anyone could go that direction. You don't have to be crazy, just stupid.. very very ignorant with little real life experience. this is why most of these people don't come from a big city, they come from a place where they're not exposed to all kinds of people.
I have neighbors who are teabagger idiots. They jump on ever conspiracy theory Glenn Beck puts out... they've had enough life experience that they would never do something like those idiots, BUT if you talk to them, they are dumb as dirt. The only friends and relatives I have that are tea partiers, are all organically stupid. They are easily led.

(1,941 posts)I make a distinction between a rational but warped view of reality and straight up crazy latching onto something warped.
For example, I think McVeigh exactly knew what he was doing. It was rational and he was sane. Calculated evil and not accomplishing his goals but he was in control the whole time.
Same goes for the Norway shooter breivik. He knew what he was doing.
These people sound more crazy. Just why exactly are they shooting three people and killing themselves? What's the point? It's just nuts.

(20,166 posts)but I'm wondering if they didn't somehow believe their actions would spark an "Arab Spring"-style rebellion in the way the person who immolated himself did.
One of the shooters may have been at Clive Bundy's ranch (he was apparently kicked off the ranch, so you know what state of mind he was in), so in their fevered imaginations they may have believed their stupid acts would somehow finally galvanize the "patriots" into taking action.
Based on what some right-wingers were expecting to happen during the so-called "American Spring" rally, I really think these people believe they're in the vast majority and all it's going to take is that one or two sparks to mobilize them.
This kind of deranged expectation is found in The Turner Diaries, the racist fantasy about a right-wing revolution in America that helped to inspire Timothy McVeigh.
Like these two morons, the protagonist in that book goes out in a blaze of glory (he flies into the Pentagon with an atomic bomb, based on the Wikipedia summary) to help further the "revolution."

(37,449 posts)Several neighbors identified the man as Jared, while one called the woman Amanda.
Like many of the neighbors contacted, Krista Koch said she didnt know the couples last names. She described them as militant. They talked about planning to kill police officers, going underground and not coming out until the time was right to kill.
Brandon Monroe, 22, has lived in the complex for about two weeks. He said the man who lived in the apartment that was being searched often rambled about conspiracy theories. He often wore camouflage or dressed as Peter Pan to work as a Fremont Street Experience street performer. A woman lived with him, Monroe said, but he didnt see her as often.
They were weird people, Monroe said, adding that he thought the couple used methamphetamines.
The man told Monroe he had been kicked off Cliven Bundys ranch 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas while people from throughout the U.S. gathered there in protest of a Bureau of Land Management roundup of Bundys cattle.

(1,245 posts)Sounds also like neighbors were too afraid of these nut-jobs to call authorities and clue them in to an obviously threatening situation.
Personally I wouldn't put it past a few other idiots over the next week or so to read this story and take it as some kind of 'call to arms', given all the propaganda and programming they've been fed over the years.
If the whole "American Spring" hadn't been such a overwhelmingly pathetic bust, I might actually worry that these idiots might be able to do some actual damage, but ... like as not, any kind of 'uprising' that comes as a result is just going to result in a couple of attacks, a lot of sadness ... and a few funerals ... Mostly for the nut-jobs carrying out the attacks.
Law enforcement is going to need to REALLY be on the look-out in upcoming weeks. Glad my brother-in-law (Maricopa Sheriff's Dept) is on leave from an on-the-job injury he sustained a couple weeks back ...

Violence
When a sovereign feels particularly desperate, angry, battle-weary and cornered, his next government contact, no matter how minor, can be his final straw. The resulting rage can be lethal. In 1995 in Ohio, a sovereign named Michael Hill pulled a gun on an officer during a traffic stop. Hill was killed. In 1997, New Hampshire extremist Carl Drega shot dead two officers and two civilians, and wounded another three officers before being killed himself. In that same year in Idaho, when brothers Doug and Craig Broderick were pulled over for failing to signal, they killed one officer and wounded another before being killed themselves in a violent gun battle. In December 2003, members of the Bixby family, who lived outside of Abbeville, S.C., killed two law enforcement officers in a dispute over a small sliver of land next to their home. And in May 2010, Jerry and Joseph Kane, a father and son sovereign team, shot to death two West Memphis, Ark., police officers who had pulled them over in a routine traffic stop. Later that day, the Kanes were killed in a fierce shootout with police that wounded two other officers.

(946 posts)the shooters had openly spoken of committing a massacre.
Hours after a man and woman killed two police officers at an east Las Vegas pizza restaurant and then gunned down another victim at a nearby Wal-Mart before killing themselves, a picture of the shooters began to emerge.
Residents at an apartment complex where it appeared the two lived together said they had a reputation for spouting racist, anti-government views, bragging about their gun collection and boasting that theyd spent time at Cliven Bundys ranch during a recent standoff there between armed militia members and federal government agents.
The duo also told people they planned to commit a mass shooting, said Brandon Moore, a resident of the complex.
