Insurgents In Iraq Overrun Mosul Provincial Government Headquarters

(Reuters) - Insurgents overran the headquarters of the provincial government in Iraq's northern city of Mosul late on Monday, making further gains in a fourth day of fighting in the country's second-largest city.
Governor Atheel Nujaifi was trapped inside the building but managed to escape while police held back an assault by hundreds of militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades, sniper rifles and heavy machine guns mounted on vehicles.
The western side of Mosul is now in control of militants, who are advancing steadily southwards in the direction of a major army base where a military airport and top-security prison are located, three army officers told Reuters.
Earlier on Monday, Nujaifi made a televised plea to the city's inhabitants to fight militants who have been regaining ground in Iraq and last Friday moved into Mosul.

A multi-pronged assault across central and northern Iraq in the past four days shows that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis) has taken over from the al-Qa’ida organisation founded by Osama bin Laden as the most powerful and effective extreme jihadi group in the world.
Isis now controls or can operate with impunity in a great stretch of territory in western Iraq and eastern Syria, making it militarily the most successful jihadi movement ever.
Led since 2010 by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, also known as Abu Dua, it has proved itself even more violent and sectarian than what US officials call the “core” al-Qa’ida, led by Ayman al-Zawahiri, who is based in Pakistan. Isis is highly fanatical, killing Shia Muslims and Christians whenever possible, as well as militarily efficient and under tight direction by top leaders.

(2,060 posts)was listening to Oliver North being interviewed today about something else and he mentioned Isis and how powerful they are. The other thing he mentioned was Iran now has a foolproof plan for continuing their nuke production and that the US cannot stop it. I didn't get to hear the entire interview unfortunately.

The destabilization that follows the aftermath of occupation and regime change has never been worth the loss of lives and resources to me. Historical treasure and entire cities and nations are left desolate. My heart grieves when I think of what happened to beautiful Lebanon. Iraq was world antiquity and now it is a shambles. When will we ever learn?
