House panel bars US funds for Guantanamo transfers

WASHINGTON (AP) A House panel has overwhelmingly backed a measure barring the use of U.S. funds for the transfer of detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The move comes amid a congressional outcry over the swap of five Taliban leaders for an imprisoned American soldier.
The Appropriations Committee voted 33-13 on Tuesday for an amendment to the defense spending bill that captured bipartisan frustration with the Obama administration for failing to give Congress 30 days notice before Guantanamo detainees are released. Five were exchanged for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (boh BURG-dahl).
The amendment was sponsored by Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (FREE-ling-hy-zehn) of New Jersey and backed by six Democrats. It would prohibit money for the foreign transfer of detainees. The five Taliban were sent to Qatar.
The full House debates the bill next week.

(47,370 posts)Nicolle Wallace, "This president had six years to close Gitmo.............", one of several such comments about Obama not getting certain things done. She actually seemed sincere, so I'm assuming she doesn't follow current events outside of FOX News.

(6,045 posts)Most of the folks here on DU?? They all CRY CRY CRY about Obama not closing GITMO when he actually tried TWICE when the Democrats controlled everything & almost all of them stabbed him in the back!!! And that did not stop the DU crowd from blaming Obama on & on for the past 6yrs.
So, not sure why the vote was as close as it was to block funding for transfer of GITMO detainees.

(47,370 posts)paying attention or they have very poor memories. Somehow people on the left and the right seem to think the President has some kind of super powers and blame him for everything that does or doesn't happen on his watch.
I remember too well Obama reaching out, compromising, and trying to do the right thing in a reasonable way. Many of Obama's supporters were naive and in some ways, I think he was as well.

(53,661 posts)They refused federally and in the states to allow them to come to the USA for trial under our law or be imprisoned here.
The GOP loves GITMO, praises it as a resort location, and they want it to stay open. They're the party of waterboarding and call what happened in Abu Graib a frat house prank. I'd like to know what fraternity they were in that practiced that stuff.
This is just the latest of their stunts to blame Obama from the right and the left. SSDD.
