Omaha has been picked to host an equestrian world championship event, beating out Hong Kong and the Dutch city of s-Hertogenbosch for the honor.
Officials with the Fédération Equestre Internationale announced Tuesday that Omaha will host the 2017 World Cup Finals in both show jumping and dressage, a "horse dancing" event where riders and horses perform specific movements.
The four-day event will be held in spring 2017 at the CenturyLink Center and is expected to attract 80,000 people.
The CenturyLink has played host to a smaller show jumping competition for the last two years. That event, The International, attracted more than 100 competitors from a half-dozen countries.

This is huge for the USA to get this event.

(3,580 posts)That is a big deal. I've never been to a world cup, when I lived in NJ I did get the chance to go either to the USET in Gladstone or to Devon in Pa to see international level competition. One of the thrills I had when I lived in NJ was to trailer to the USET and ride their cross country course, clearly I never jumped their big 3 day fences but it was fun to ride around the big fences, lol.

(34,131 posts)I'll have to tell my friend who used to show and now teaches dressage. She may want to try to attend.
Thanks!
PS - Not your doing, butI really hate when reporters call dressage "horse dancing." Dressage was originally the training used for war horses. In my opinion, it is better compared to gymnastic floor exercises, but that still trivializes the sport.

(37,285 posts)Omaha is just easier to pronounce that's all. In the Netherlands they call 's Hertogenbosch, Den Bosch. Like 'sGravenhage, Den Haag.

Sport for the 1%. by the 1%. and of the 1%.

(1,269 posts)The farm where they are bred and train is gorgeous. The mares are left to the fields with their foals. The bonding to their keepers is especially important. I haven't yet seen the Lippizaners, but hope to.
And, yeah, dressage is rooted in military training. It's like watching ballet, when you see someone perform it well.
Good for Omaha. Nice to see International competition over here beyond Kentucky's facilities.
