HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER CANTOR DEFEATED IN PRIMARY
Source: AP
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has been defeated by a tea party-backed challenger in the Republican primary.
Economics professor Dave Brat won a stunning upset victory against Cantor on Tuesday in the 7th District Republican primary contest, which is in the Richmond area.
Cantor is the second-most powerful member of the U.S. House and was seen by some as a possible successor to the House speaker.
His loss to a political novice with little money marks a huge victory for the tea party movement, which supported Cantor just a few years ago.

(101,306 posts)Sorry about the sources, but it's RW sites that would have run these polls:
The poll showed that eight days before polling day on June 10, Cantor had firm support from 40 percent of 583 active primary voters, while challenger Dave Brat has firm support from 28 percent of those voters.
Another 12 percent of the respondents leaned towards Cantor, 11 percent leaned towards Brat, and 9 percent were undecided or declined to answer, said the poll, which was conducted June 2 by Vox Populi Polling.
That leaves Cantor with 52 percent support on June 2, his rival with 40 percent support, and 9 percent undecided.
For Cantor, thats a sharp fall from 2012, when he defeated his primary opponent by 79 percent to 21 percent.

(214 posts)... I have been living for the day he fell to defeat.
Fox News is desperately trying to spin this as conservative angst over Eric Cantor being for immigration reform so GOP TV is trying to send a message to the GOP to remain hardline on immigration. Maybe that's part of why the right-wingers were agitated to go to the polls. However, I know a fair number of far-right Tea Party types and nobody has mentioned this to me.
Cantor's internal polling had him at 62%. Certainly, my Va 7th is gerrymandered to be a very safe GOP district and 60-70% is typically what Cantor could count on in elections. Democrats have written this district off my entire life which is understandable. I don't know much about Trammell who's running as a Democrat here (we're lucky someone even bothered running in such a safe district) but I'm sure he's weak.
What people have to keep in mind is Virginia has an open primary system which the GOP has always hated and fretted over. This sort of unexpected upset is why. I plan to vote Democratic in November but in this primary I voted Tea Party for the 1st time because an open primary where voter turnout is low and mainstream GOP voter complacency is high (like Cantor they expected an easy win) is the only way to unseat an entrenched Republican like Eric Cantor. You'll never beat a mainstream Republican like Eric Cantor in a general election. Some unknown Tea Party crackpot like Brat? There's a shot!
Dave Brat is an inarticulate run-of-the-mill Tea Party sloganeer. It's the Democrat's best chance to score a big win and net a seat in the House.
Keep in mind the immigration reform issue Fox News is using to explain away a Cantor loss overlooks the fact that Brat's hardline Tea Party views don't poll well here. In a general election reform is a winner for Democrats.

jmowreader
(50,553 posts)It was also supposed to be a safe Cantor seat. Most people figured Cantor would be reelected automatically as often as he wanted to be. Cantor losing the primary changes everything.
Early indications are that the majority of Brat's support in the primary came from people who voted for him simply to overthrow Cantor. I know Ben Jones from Georgia was pushing Democrats hard to cross over and vote for Brat, and it seems to have worked.
If two things happen, Trammell gets a lot of $upport from the DNC and Brat does enough monumentally stupid acts, I'd say the odds of Cantor being replaced by a Democrat are decent. We know Brat is going to shoot himself in the foot with at least one 70-round drum. Given that, I think a lot of non-teabagger Republicans will sit out this election, hope the Democrat takes it, and try to pick someone a little more acceptable for 2016.

(17,186 posts)If Mr Brat is elected, which is probable, he will nevertheless lack Mr Cantor's seniority within the party. This has consequences in terms of committee appointments, etc. Futhermore, Mr Brat is such an extremist that he will not be a comfortable, co-operative colleague for the rest of the House GOP, thus promoting division within the party. Of course, if Mr Trammell wins, these results also follow while strengthening the democrats as well. And Mr Trammell has a greater chance of beating Mr Brat than he did of beating Mr Cantor.
The second reason is that it removes Eric Cantor from our nation's House of Representatives, which is a condition long-desired by anyone who has ever heard him open his mouth. Schadenfreude has its place in the hearts of men.

rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)that if the Republican Party goes completely off the edge that will leave us with only one party. While that being the Democratic party sounds good, there is no reason to believe it will be the Democratic Party we all love. As the Republicans Ship sinks, more and more conservatives crawl under our tent bringing their ideologies with them and thus marginalize the left of the party. I favor two strong parties that keep each other honest (as possible in Wash the DC).
malthaussen
(17,186 posts)I'm not laying any money on that as yet, though. I think there are a few, minor signs that the less-extreme members of the GOP are starting to realize that their party is running off the rails, but they have to let the infection run its course before they can right things. In some ways, the Dems are in the same position because of all the soi-disant "moderates" in the party who really should be in the other one. Politics in the US really needs a reorganization, and I've long wished we had a more parliamentary system with more than two parties. Doubt that will happen, though.
Personally, I pretty much feel the system is broken right now, so I can give full vent to my delight at that [expletive deleted] Cantor being shown the door. The Republicans have been doing a great job this century in proving to the American people that government is useless and there's no reason to vote. One lesson we will learn in the upcoming midterms is how well that message has taken. In the mean time, though, anything that breaks up the solidarity of the GOP is good, because I shudder to imagine what would happen if they could force through the legislation they really want.

But Cantor was the kind of evil asshole you wanted on the other side--just like Dick Armey used to be. Eric Cantor accomplished absolutely fucking nothing in his time in Congress--which is a very, very good thing, and nearly derailed the entire GOP agenda by plotting for the Speaker's job. His machinations kept the GOP maneuvering against itself. And not one significant Republican-authored bill has been signed into law in five and a half years.
Cantor's time in the public eye was going to last only as long as the evil people around him decided he was useful--his liabilities were too well known to permit him to travel much higher up the ladder. But I'm very very glad to see him get deservedly stomped by the voters.

(214 posts)The 1st thing you've got to realize about the Va 7th that's it's a heavily gerrymandered district that's safe for the GOP so, sure, it would be tough for the Democrats to win it and, even if they pull a fast one here, very hard to hold unless the guy is pretty moderate (think of our Senator Mark Warner). Cantor and Bliley before him typically won 60-70%.
Virginia runs an open primary which is an opportunity for Democrats like me to vote against an entrenched Republican in hopes of some crackpot extremist like Dave Brat will win and give us chances in a general election. I'm pretty sure your run-of-the-mill GOP voter here took the primary for granted. Turnout was light (though above average for a primary at my precinct).
What gave us this shot was Dave Brat ran a few decent ads at the very end and by embracing the Tea Party your right-wing nut-job talk radio set had an orgasm over him. That energized the right-wing nut jobs to the polls. There was some crazy Brat poll worker outside my precinct shouting some crap at me as I entered.
On the other hand, Eric Cantor ran a bunch of lazy, unimaginative ads trying to paint Tea Party Brat as a liberal - no, I'm not kidding - using the conservative meme he's a college professor (and we all know they're bunch of a drooling libs). Cantor's skilled staff certainly didn't have any polling showing a conservative voter surge or they would have played it differently.
Every poll showed Brat losing so I don't think the conventional wisdom it's an indication of conservative angst over immigration reform and the resurgence of the Tea Party is correct. I'm certain the tipping point was Democratic voters like me turning out. In a primary it doesn't take many votes to win.
I'm hoping the Democrats run a solid race here. A lot of moderate Republicans, IMHO, will cross over if they run a mainstream campaign. If nothing else, the establishment Republicans likely will stay home rather than vote Tea Party.

Precinct-by-precinct results for the GOP primary in the 7th DistrictEric Cantor succumbs to tea party challenger Tuesday
....
When Election Day came, the turnout was high: About 65,000 people voted, which was up from 47,037 two years ago (when Cantor captured 79 percent of the vote).
....
For other Republicans in Congress, the message of the defeat was that if you try to play both sides of the intra-party divide you will lose. But how Republicans can govern without bringing both sides together remains a question.
I dont know where we go now as a party. Im very concerned that we may go all the way to the right, following Ted Cruz and the shutdown congressmen, and marginalizing us as a responsible governing party, Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.) said on Tuesday night.
