Dem Running For Cantor's Seat: Virginia 'Hungry For Radical Change'
Source: TPM
KAY STEIGER JUNE 10, 2014, 10:01 PM EDT
Randolph-Macon College Professor Jack Trammell, the Democrat who secured the nomination in the district held by the newly defeated House Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), released a statement Tuesday that said Virginians are "hungry for radical change" after "dysfunctional and reckless politics."
-snip-
Read the full statement below:
I am honored and humbled to accept the Democratic nomination in Virginias 7th Congressional District. I am running because I believe Virginians are hungry for a radical change from the dysfunctional and reckless politics being practiced by those in Congress and the results of tonights primary election are the proof. In the coming months, I look forward to a spirited campaign where can talk about the issues that matter to our community, and how we can get Congress re-focused on the priorities that truly matter to us.

(54,353 posts)No one figured Cantor would not get renominated, as it was a sure thing that he would be re-elected if he was the Republican nominee. However, now than an equally unknown teabagger extremist is the nominee, the deck gets completely re-shuffled.

(31,981 posts)The DCCC will only step in if they do polling and determine it is a close race. Otherwise they will leave him hanging in the wind.

(54,353 posts)But if there is any vestige of Howard Dean's 50 state strategy left at the DNC, and they smell a little blood, they might try their hand. The teabaggers took the House in 2010 after going after weak or open Democratic seats. If it is determined that there might be enough discouraged Cantor supporters in the district, it could be considered to be in play. I don't know if DFA can spread their resources that thin, but I'm sure they'd love to try their hand at flipping the seat, too. I'll see what Jim has to say.

(10,857 posts)Mark my words when I say that at least one of these Tea Party primary winners is going to crash and burn before November. Just having a candidate in place to capture votes from incidents like that is a wise choice.
So despite the fact that Cantor's landed aristocracy district is unlikely to break D without a push, the Libertarian college professor that Trammell is running against might be just the guy to give that push.
So yeah, our guy probably will be hanging in the wind, but we'll be in position to cut him down if the other guy does what we all expect him to do and says something stupid.

She certainly could use some donations: Rothfus has $1 million cash on hand; McClelland has only $31k.

(10,303 posts)I'd rather see a Democratic gain than a Tea Party gain. Mr. Cantor losing his primary election is enough of a wake-up call. If the Tea Party candidate wins in the general election then on face value it may be better than having Cantor. Assuming the Republican/Tea Party coalition maintain control of the House (which I hope isn't the case) then we'd be looking at the need for a new House Majority Leader.
I don't know if Mr. Cantor is going to try run as an independent (or if he can even do this) or a write-in campaign. If that happens then I believe if the Democratic candidate has a very successful "get out the vote" campaign it could well be a Democratic Party gain.

(7,699 posts)Professional career
Trammell has worked for procurement in state government, and as a special education and history teacher in central Virginias public schools. He currently works at Randolph-Macon College as Director of Disability Support Services and Associate Professor of Sociology.[1]
Trammel is a frequently published author, his latest book The Richmond Slave Trade: The Economic Backbone of The Old Dominion, was published in 2012. He also served as president of the Blue Ridge Virginia Writers Club.[4]
Political career
He has been a prolific writer in many diverse areas ranging from education to history, including two dozen books or book chapters; he was a regular contributor to the Washington Times.{[5] His history with the Democratic Party goes back to his days at Grove City College, where he experienced a de facto ban in the school newspaper due to his Democratic views, and he spoke out then (as now) against various forms of discrimination in higher education. He was an active worker on both Bill Clinton presidential campaigns in Kentucky, where he also wrote local position papers and statewide editorials and quickly was recognized for his ideas.[1] He also worked for the Michael Dukakis campaign.[1]

(7,402 posts)In his first press conference today it showed that Brat may not yet be ready for prime time. He was asked a simple yes or no question and couldn't answer it. He was asked "should there be a minimum wage". He said that he hadn't thought that one through then went on to express an abstract conservative principle. Hit him early while he is wobbly.
Chuck Todd made a salient point today on Brat's key point on immigration. He said that as long as the middle class are struggling that immigration will go nowhere because people fear bringing in cheap labor. Brat will play up that fear big time so that is another reason to pound him on things like minimum wage early on.
