Coal Company CEO Threatens To Sue EPA For ‘Lying’ About Climate Change
Source: Think Progress
The owner of the largest independent coal producer in the U.S. is threatening to sue the Environmental Protection Agency over its new regulations on carbon emissions from existing coal plants, saying the agency has been lying about the existence of global warming, and that the earth is actually getting colder.
In an extended profile published last month, Murray Energy Corp. founder Robert Murray told WV Executive that the EPAs claims that climate change exists violates the federal Data Quality Act, which requires agencies to rely on quality, objective information to inform its decisions.
Under the act, they are obligated to tell the truth, and they are not telling the truth about global warming, Murray reportedly said. They are not telling hardly any truth about the science. The earth has actually cooled over the last 17 years, so under the Data Quality Act, theyve actually been lying about so-called global warming.
Murray added, This lawsuit will force them to not just take data from the environmentalists and publish it, as they have been doing, but to review that data and make sure its accurate.
Of course, the EPA does not just take data from environmentalists to inform its position on climate change. A comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed research shows a 97 percent consensus among scientists that global warming is real and primarily driven by humans. And the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change, a massive global effort to compile and analyze climate research by scientists and experts around the world, found that there is a 95 percent likelihood that human activities drove 74 percent of the observed global warming since 1950.

(426 posts)then wipe his ass in court. Another moron who knows nothing about science. Could probably get Neil deGrasse Tyson and/or Bill Nye to testify for the EPA.

(6,045 posts)Are qualified to testify for the EPA on the existence of global warming.
Try perhaps Dr. Michael E. Mann who has battled the IDIOTS on the right for decades & Dr. Richard Alley who has the same gift as Dr. Tyson of teaching the public science.

(5,756 posts)What an ass. He damned well knows that global climate change is an issue that is real. He's just bloviating to buy himself more time to continue to get rich while he pollutes the world for our kids and grand-kids. Just as the Big Tobacco knew their product was lethal but did their best to buy time until it ran out. Cherry-picking 17 years of data is disgusting stupidity like saying, "Well, it's cold today, so there mustn't be global warming."

(45,984 posts)We sue Robert Murray for lying about climate change. And the Koch brothers. And Rex Tillerson.
If Mr. Murray doesn't like that, then we put him on trial for manslaughter. How many miners has he killed with his criminal negligence?

(2,004 posts)Are there any attorneys out there that would take this on? This would do a lot of good in exposing him for what he is. His profits are at the expense of the health of millions of American citizens, not least the very miners he puts at risk everyday. All the actual men I have met who really work in the mines have been good people, they take pride in doing a dangerous job and bringing home a paycheck. I want these men to live long and healthy lives working at jobs that will not ruin their health through black lung and all the other ills associated with mining. The environmental movement should work on how to get these people good jobs that will not kill them, so they see Bob Murray for the monster that he is.
Great post. Thanks!

Oh, the humanity, Poor, poor, little rich man.
He's not a sleazy operator who kills his workers through greed, arrogance and slipshod safety practices. He's a martyr.

(2,004 posts)It is so sad that there are so few job opportunities where his mines are located that people are forced to work for him. He is on a mission to destroy Captina Creek in Ohio, which has the highest Index of Biotic Integrity of any watershed in Ohio which basically means it is has the highest water quality in Ohio. Bob Murray's mines have had spills into this watershed and he is trying to force the OhioEPA into approving completely improper plans that would destroy the quality of this stream. More than one OhioEPA employee have lost their jobs over this. John Kasich keeps firing people at the behest of Bob Murray, but the news media keeps it quiet.

(22,651 posts)Murray started his coal life as a 16 year old miner, he had serious injury from mining accidents.
I guess he never, ever thought past the 'cheaper costs the better'- 'profits'.
Most of the problem is the weak Corp. controlled,EPA, the fines should be in the millions of dollars. Jail time for the owner. There needs to be a cap on violations where they lose the entire business.
