Oregon high school shooting: Gunman identified as freshman Jared Michael Padgett
Source: Portland Oregonian
The shooter used an AR-15 type rifle in the attack and carried, but did not use, a semi-automatic handgun. Investigators also recovered nine loaded magazines with the capability of holding several hundred rounds.
The shooter also had a large knife. He was wearing a non-ballistic vest used for carrying ammunition and other items. He also was wearing a multi-sport helmet with a camouflage design.
The shooter obtained the weapons from his family home. The weapons had been secured, but he defeated the security measures.

And they are much more accurate than a Glock.
ManiacJoe
(10,136 posts)For humans, all rifles are more accurate than all handguns due to the longer sight radius.

(574 posts)barrel length that matters. I'm not very knowledgeable about such things, but isn't that why we "rifle" even pistol barrels?
ManiacJoe
(10,136 posts)It greatly improves the accuracy. The 4-inch barrels on handguns do it just fine.
The length of the barrel on rifles allows for the full burn of the gun powder to maximize the speed of the bullet for the most range possible.

(10,136 posts)You tend to use what is common and easily acquired in your area.

(574 posts)heck, you can take a rubber hose from your gas stove into a bottle of Styrofoam and make a decent Molotov cocktail. A high school chemistry class and a trip to the drug store can make you a serious danger to society. This kid could have started a fire at every exit of his school, and killed everyone inside. But "easily acquired" means guns here in the US, and you don't even have to open a book.
I don't know if I'm more upset at how guns are everywhere or that a high school freshman with a kill/death wish didn't know how to do his homework. It's easier for the crazies to get a gun and shoot than it is to firebomb a public building. I can't believe I just typed that.

(53,661 posts)And that his actions are the worst form of cowardice. See story of a veteran coming home because of these shootings:
That's It. I Am Coming Home. The NRA has made mass killings normal in this country. I'm coming home from years of serving my country overseas to help stop it.
This is too much. We have Tea Party political activists shooting cops from behind, in the head, then covering their dead bodies with the Tea Party Gadsden flag and shouting, The Revolution begins now!
No. I am coming home. I need to be there and be part of the solution. Moms Demand Action is getting some traction, but they can use the lean-in of a few U.S. Army Airborne Infantry Rangers. I am only sorry that I did not stand up to this threat to our nation before. I am sorry. I was busy.
I have been overseas in Afghanistan and in NATO nations for half a decade while the insanity of the National Rifle Association expanded and exploded, and the NRA became, essentially, the tool of death in the United States. They made mass killings normal...
A whole lot more at the link that is even stronger and well worth reading, IMO:

Although I believe that we'd be better served by renewed commitment to public service to rebuild infrastructure and give those not yet brainwashed by the Teaterrorist, etc., some insight into positive solutions instead of destructive ones.

Multnomah County GOP Chairman Jeff Reynolds said, We are here to reaffirm our strong defense of the Second Amendment and the right to personal protection. The Bill of Rights is inviolable, despite what the gun-grabbers in Salem might try.
Reynolds went on to say, Weve recently caught wind that the Democrats in Salem, led once again by Ginny Burdick, will attempt to take away our personal right to bear arms. The Multnomah County Republican Party remains steadfast in its dedication to defeating such efforts.
Multnomah County Republican Vice Chair Anne Marie Gurney echoed these sentiments, saying, Those who would erode our 2nd Amendment rights in Salem fail to recognize that Oregonians, no matter their party registration, are opposed to their efforts. Voters will make this known in the upcoming legislative session, but more importantly, on November 4, 2014. One right you just dont try to take away is the right of an Oregonian to own guns.
The Lincoln Day Dinner, at which the drawing will be held, promises to be a special event. Another great Conservative, Rafael Cruz, will be the keynote speaker, speaking of his inspirational escape from tyranny and embracing the American Dream. Multnomah County Republicans are dedicated to fighting for our 2nd Amendment rights, as well as everyones opportunity to achieve the American Dream. We recognize that those who oppose the unfettered, legal ownership of rifles are also attempting to put legislation through our upcoming legislature that will make it easier for criminals to own guns, and harder for hard working citizens to own one. The Multnomah County Republicans invite all those who would like to celebrate constitutional liberty to RSVP for the Lincoln Day Dinner and to purchase a raffle ticket at our website, www.multnomahgop.org. According to Chair Reynolds, well over 100 tickets to the Lincoln Day Dinner have already been sold, and a sellout is expected. A quick sellout of the raffle tickets is also expected.
