Long waits at the VA for mental health care

Source: AP-Excite

By JUAN CARLOS LLORCA and DAVID B. CARUSO

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Nick D'Amico, a deeply troubled Army veteran, had been seeing a counselor every other week. But he found it next to impossible to get a follow-up appointment at the El Paso VA with a psychiatrist who could adjust his medication, according to his mother.

The best the system could offer, she says, was a half-year wait for a teleconference with a Veterans Affairs psychiatrist in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

That appointment was still two months away when D'Amico, 45, left his wallet, phone, watch and Desert Storm hat at home and committed suicide by driving off a cliff outside El Paso last September.

"It's shameful. It's disgusting. It's got to stop," says his mother, Bonnie D'Amico.

FULL story at link.

First, I'm a veteran. Fortunately, I never saw combat and was pretty much in the same shape when I was honorably discharged as I was when I voluntarily enlisted. Now...

...all day long I've been hearing stories of vets being let down, forgotten or stone walled. At work where I provide member support for a major insurance company with a very large military related membership, I spoke with four disabled vets. 3 were having financial difficulties and the 4th had already down sized his life to it's bare necessities and his payment was under 50 bucks. He was able to pay his minimum payment this month as opposed to a fourth of the total premium as he used to do since 1973. Of the other 3, 2 were Viet Nam era vets. One colonel and one sergeant major. Neither have received one penny for their disabilities or even their retirement! The last is receiving a meager benefit but little to no medical care.

Now I log on here to catch up on the news and I see more of the same. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

No real point to this reply other than to vent and give your thread support. Now, excuse me, I must hang my head in shame and cry in frustration over the treatment of our protectors.
