Poll: Grimes Holds Slim Lead Over McConnell

Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes holds a slim lead over Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), according to a new poll. A Magellan Strategies poll released Thursday found Grimes leading McConnell 49 percent to 46 percent in the 2014 race. Five percent of respondents were undecided.
The poll also found that 58 percent of respondents would be more likely to oppose a candidate for U.S. Senate that supports the Obama administration's new carbon emission regulations, which seek to reduce emissions by 30 percent from existing power plants by 2030.
Grimes has distanced herself from the President on coal and released a statement promising to "fiercely oppose" those new carbon emission regulations. She has also made a point of criticizing McConnell for not doing enough to protect Kentucky coal jobs.
The poll was conducted June 4-5 using automated interviews among likely general election voters in Kentucky. Forty percent of respondents identified as registered Republican voters, while 56 percent identified as registered Democrats. It had a margin of error of 3.45 percentage points.

(27,556 posts)the big irony would be if that wave won Dems the house, but lost them the Senate...

(59,501 posts)All budget bills start in the House. It would be seen if the Republicans change the filibuster rule - as we could have. However, there seems to be few ways that the Republicans get us much below 50. If you assume, with the anti incumbent shift that we get KY and GA, they need 8 seats to get the majority. To get this, at least some Democrats polling ahead, would have to lose.
It might suggest that one excellent idea is for all Democrats to get behind Warren's student loan bill and maybe further regulations on banks. Both would be populist legislation and there really could be a divide by party. Not to mention, both would be great things to do. The other thing that ALL incumbents need to do is to be all over there states for the entire August break -- and as many long weekends as possible. Depending on their competencies, they need to be at everything from State Fairs, to local diners, to mall events -- and in areas, like the NE, hosting town halls where they answer questions face to face. They need to be seen, not just as competent and on people's side, but as their representatives. ( One race for this is NH - where in 2010-2012, Scott Brown did ZERO town halls - even as he was pushed by the media to do so. Warren had them all over the place - and as a counter to thinking that a sitting Senator had less time, Kerry, a far more senior, busy Senator who really DID speak to kings, queens, and Prime Ministers and to HRC and Obama, did 5 in 2011. If Shaheen, their former governor, is out there - Brown will have a harder time and it is likely that he avoided them in MA because he is horrible at them.)
Glad to hear it. McConnell has pissed off Warren & she's on her way to support Grimes. Warren ought to be able to fire up Grimes supporters and those undecided. Warren is going to open up a can of whoop ass!

(15,237 posts)That would be bad news for Citizens United, dark money, PACS, Koch brothers, national party agendas, arrogant asshole politicians everywhere. Out of touch McConnell should be a really good candidate for a big upset.

(31,811 posts)I know three IndiePublicans (not TEA types) in my district that are voting against our currenct Republican Congressman - even gave money to Janice Kovach. Why? Looking at his FB during the 'shut down' last fall he was stepping and fetching for nudges screaming about Muslims and Conspiracies and Government takeovers from places like Montana, TN, and Texas. We (his constituents) were trying to get him to wake up and smell the financial situation he was putting the NJ 7th (which includes to of the wealthiest counties in America) in with his nonsense.
As well - these same folks are disgusted with Chris Christie. Nothing we can about him - we are stuck. He's gonna get away with what he's done.
But a little revolution at the Federal level to make his life miserable ain't a bad thing!

(19,564 posts)Hopefully Warren's current strike against McConnell will help bring more attention to Grimes, bring in more money. We could win this one!

(30,058 posts)First McConnell will be gone and it appears Kentucky will have a great Senator, one who will work for those of Kentucky but the rest of the nation also.

(37,726 posts)Alison Grimes stands a good chance of upsetting the apple cart for senator Turtle Man (R) Kentucky. Mitch you have succeeded in making people detest you, the same way the people detested Eric Cantor. I like it!
