Americans Being Evacuated From Iraqi Air Base

Source: Associated Press

Officials say three planeloads of Americans are being evacuated from a major Iraqi air base in Sunni territory north of Baghdad to escape potential threats from a fast-moving insurgency.

A current U.S. official and a former senior Obama administration official say that means the American training mission at the air field in Balad has been grounded indefinitely.

Twelve U.S. personnel who were stationed at Balad were the first to be evacuated. Several hundred American contractors are still waiting to leave.

The RW is already blaming Obama for this.

I suppose this means we'll be going back in. The seeds of this were sown a decade ago.

What a mess.

right after Iraq's creation after WWI. Some knew this wouldn't work- the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds will never get along.

I miss Saddam. Not a nice man, but our war against him was ridiculous. He was contained and kept order. All we needed to do was keep him in his little box.

but the fault falls directly on Pres Cheney I mean Bush and the lies that eff-uped Iraqi. GOPers are the blame for attacking Bowe B's family and him, in their eyes I guess it ok to leave soldiers behind. GOPers are the blame for the economy slow recovery (if any) and a lot of other things here in the US.

Boner blaming Pres O for Cantor's defeat as well. These MFers don't take consequences seriously and in the long run KARMA will kick their arses.

Seems to me that a new Iraqi government to stabilize the country never really got out of the starting gate. And if I were you I'd leave like NOW.

21. U.S. companies pulling contractors from Iraqi bases as security crumbles

The crisis in Iraq has prompted U.S. contractors with personnel there to evacuate them from areas near Baghdad that are increasingly in the line of fire as insurgent fighters capture more territory with the apparent end goal of seizing the Iraqi capital.

The individuals are being “temporarily relocated by their companies due to security concerns in the area,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement Thursday evening. The individuals involved include U.S. citizens who are currently working under contract with Iraq’s central government in support of the Pentagon’s foreign weapons sales program.

Psaki did not mention the number of personnel affected, but it could be hundreds, if not thousands, of people. The Pentagon oversaw 6,624 contractors in Iraq in October, including 1,626 Americans, according to a quarterly report released at the time. The number plummeted to 0 as the Defense Department transferred oversight of those contracts to the Baghdad government, but it is believed that many of the individuals involved stayed in Iraq and continued their work.
