Officials: 2 Cases of New Virus in Rhode Island

Source: The Boston Globe

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island health officials are reporting the first confirmed cases of a nasty mosquito-borne virus that has been rapidly spreading in the Caribbean.

Officials say the two confirmed cases of chikungunya involve travelers who returned from the Dominican Republic on May 17 and May 29. Authorities are still investigating several other cases.

Chikungunya causes high fevers and joint pain but is rarely fatal. There is no vaccine and the main treatment is pain medication.

A spokesman on Saturday said the Rhode Island Department of Health will not immediately release details on the towns where sickened people live because authorities are still investigating the infections.

Get out your mosquito repellant. This one is nasty. It can give you arthritis that lasts for years. McCamy Taylor Jun 2014 #1

And unlike West Nile that traveled slowly across the country because it traveled only in birds as they migrated and people were an accidental host (meaning that people who traveled with the disease could not give it to new mosquitoes) I am pretty sure that if you bring this one home with you to Atlanta this summer, the mosquitoes in Atlanta can drink your blood and pass it on.
