Children hurt when parade cannon malfunctions in Orem (Utah)

Source: The Salt Lake Tribune

Three children were hurt after a cannon malfunctioned at the Orem Summerfest parade.

A Civil War reenactment group fired a cannon on 800 East, just south of Center Street, at the beginning of the parade. When the cannon went off, a spark landed on "a large pouch that contained additional charges for the cannon," according to an Orem Police news release.

Having worked around and with explosives for much of my career, I just don't understand why such utter incompetence is allowed to flourish and thrive in the name of patriotism and flag waving. BATF needs to get involved and investigate this incident.

What do you want the journalist to do, speculate on causes and what should happen to those responsible?
That's not journalism, modern or otherwise. The writer has the basic facts, with a much higher likelihood of them being accurate, and that's better than the BS rumormill on Facebook that is probably sweeping through that community at this time.

The link in the OP contains very little in the way of facts and many of them make no sense when story taken as a whole. What I want the reporter to do is ask questions and investigate the story. As presented, the article is not worth the electrons used.

Far too many "news" sites are more interested in "first to publish" as opposed to "quality of reporting".

And how long should a journalist sit on a story while searching for that information before publishing what he or she has been able to find?

You mean like ask questions of the witnesses and victims?

Missing info: What actually happened. Too many of the reported "facts" do not make sense when taken together as a whole. Maybe it is just poor writing skills. Maybe the reporter just does not understand what he is reporting on.

They aren't toys for goodness sakes and they shouldn't be treated that way. Was it a case of stupid parents allowing their kids to play too close to the explosives? I hope the kids are o.k. and it won't be too traumatic to them.

...etc., etc., etc.

- These guys keep reenacting this war because they didn't like the outcome, or they did. Either way it's still sick.

Get Well Soon, kids and stay away from these nuts!

Men! I welcome you all to the town of Appomattox in the state of Virginia. We have gathered at this site for one sole purpose—to express our shared love of history and profound concern for its preservation. The final battle of the Civil War was waged here where we stand. On this hallowed ground, General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate forces to the North, exactly one month ago, today.

Some of you may be asking yourselves, is it too soon? Should we give it more time before performing a theatrical reenactment of the events that occurred here? To that I say it’s never too soon to seek a meaningful perspective on history. And also, to be fair, it’s not like it was last weekend.

As I look out into the crowd, I see excitement in your eyes. I also see that many of you are still nursing some rather fresh-looking injuries from the actual Civil War. This, I contend, is merely further provocation to grab hold of history now before the wounds are healed and the memories, forgotten.

Yes, our “battlefield” is still smoldering and not yet fully cleared of casualties, but this will only add to the authenticity that necessitates a fruitful reenactment. During our two-day “battle,” as you stand amongst your fellow “soldiers,” the residual smell of gunpowder wafting through the air, the echo of distant cannons ringing in your ears, be prepared, at times, to feel as if you’ve been transported back in time to a bit earlier in the spring.

A bit of housekeeping: Remember that all hand-to-hand “combat” is to be scripted. I think you’ll find this to be a fun way to learn what was actually said during the heat of battle. Scripts will be provided in your reenactment kits. In those kits, you’ll also find all the gear you will require. What you won’t find are any of the creature comforts of today. Remember, this is April. And we will LIVE like it’s April!

Okay! Let’s all suit up and have some fun out there! And above all, be safe!

To many people to close even if the cannon just breaks apart or misfires.

I suppose it would be like saying 'CIRCUS AXE' or 'CARNIVAL NOOSE'

maybe they should leave the 'Parade Cannon' at home next time.
