Border Patrol union under fire for 'racist' tweet listing 'burrito wrapping' as part of new job description after photos revealed sub-human conditions in which immigrant children are kept

The National Border Patrol Council - the union that represents the U.S.' Border Patrol agents - is under fire after posting some controversial messages on Twitter on Saturday that critics say mocked the more than 50,000 immigrant children who have been caught crossing the border without parents since early October.

The sub-human conditions in which many of these children have been kept while in Border Patrol custody was revealed earlier this month in a collection of photos released by Democratic Texas Congressman Congressman Henry Cuellar to shine a light on what the White House later described as an 'urgent humanitarian situation.

In one of the controversial 'tweets,' the agency describes low morale, and that 'New annual job rating areas: Babysitting, Diaper Changing, Burrito Wrapping, Cleaning Cells.'

After the comment was criticized as being racist, the union 'tweeted' 'What is racist? Those are the duties agents are being assigned.'

After the uproar over the 'tweets,' the union's president, Shawn Moran, appeared on Fox News to explain how many border agents feel as though they are just the 'hired help.'

They were wanting to hire nurses to work at the Air Force base in TX. A nurse I know called the number in the ad because the ad itself didn't have details. The woman she talked to explained that the agency was trying to hire nurses to take are of kids who had come across the border. Weekly pay was going to be, I believe, a few thousand a week. When this all happened (her call) we were surprised the information about the influx had not gone mainstream yet given the number of sites in TX (think there were four places at the time) and the amount of money the Feds were wanting to pay weekly for a nurse. Think the assignment was going to be like 4 or 5 weeks. She didn't pursue the ad any further.
Guess they didn't get any or enough nurses to go after the positions so now border control is doing the tasks.

They were invented on THIS side of the border.

"Burrito" just means "small donkey" in Spanish, and if you ordered one in Tijuana, they'd give you a creepy leer, tell you to meet "Felipe" out in the back alley at midnight, and make sure you knew you'd have to pay extra.

...or so I've heard...

Thus burrito appears to be a northwest Mexican term that spread to California. Different names was used elsewhere.

Whataburger called them Taquitos not burritos. Taquito appears to be the Texas and northeast Mexico name. Whataburger is still calling them Taquitos.

But why? Why is the number so much higher now than in all of '13? Why are people being told not to discuss it? Why is no one from the administration talking about whats happening? I am quickly losing faith in this administration for various reasons. Still nowhwere near the level of the last one, but still very disappointed in what I've been seeing for some time.

of miles and walk. or try to walk on over, are guided over. Its just at the borders they get stuck because the traditional routes are blocked, they cross over into the USA deserts & more dangerous spots.

They are then on USA soil and become our responsibility.

The only people who love the crappy system are the 'for profit' corps who rake in the Federal dollars for their private 'for profit' detention prisons. They're paid $167 dollars a day for each human they hold.

apparently IMO, our Congress just doesn't give a sh** about suffering 'undocumented persons' even if they are children.

Its horrible to see how they treat the entire family. People are crying, they make them lay on the ground. Kids are terrified. There are always many cars and many armed 'agents' all over the place. Plenty standing around chatting and laughing, while people lay on the ground cuffed with those stupid Zip-ties.

The same Zip-ties I use to fix my bamboo fence.

I'd take out my iphone and record them but even when one stands outside and watches, you can see several of the 'guards' looking. I'm afraid to even take out my phone!

Those families have lived in those homes for decades, they had mortgages they were paying.

Soon after a family is torn apart, those homes go up as bank foreclosures and get bought up cheap by investors.

I wish Mexico and the UN could work together to take over the USA system and take over the care of detained/arrested persons.

Especially the children, those kids are going to be ruined for life having to exist in this horrible American 'for profit' detention system. Worse of the worse work for those detention centers. They hate their jobs and they hate the people they're PAID to care for.

..and it's kinda stupid, but as hateful racist stereotypes go, this is weak. I guess they shouldn't have aired it, that's true, but I think we're seeing an overreaction. I know Cheech and Chong have gone way past this level without raising a single eyebrow of concern. Is it truly offensive at it's core, or is it a matter of the source?

I think it can be called "insensitive" at best and be taken down as it was, then dropped. Focus on the deplorable conditions of detainment instead of this distraction.

In my current line of work (hospitality) I come across them fairly frequently. Some of them are nice people, just trying to make a living and doing their job. In my experience, they are the exceptions to the rule. The vast majority have been rude, cruel, obnoxious - and notoriously cheap. I can't go into detail about some of the experiences I have had (confidentiality laws) but suffice it to say that I and other staff members where I work have experienced firsthand the nobility, professionalism and overall decency of our border patrol guards.

Some of them truly are National treasures - patriotic men and women who honor the flag and the Country they serve. Many others I would compare more to a National disgrace, a National shame. As I am generally the first person you will see upon entering a hotel (front desk clerk) - they are often the first people that those crossing our borders will meet. The fact that so many of them are racist, or unpleasant overall, does not surprise me. What I find common is that the further west they come from, the more unpleasant they tend to be.

This racist tweet here is nothing compared to what I have heard any number of them say. I have been yelled at, even threatened, by some of these same people - a whole lot of them are absolute bullies. Not the sort of people we want protecting our borders. I strongly feel that our border patrol agents should be required to have some sociological and even psychological education and evaluation as a requirement for their jobs. If they display the mannerisms of sociopaths, bullies, or people who are intolerant of other peoples, they should be disqualified from the position.

Then of course, there are those who are contracted out by our border patrol service - and I have never met a nastier bunch. These guys (generally speaking, some of them may be decent fellows, but I have yet to meet one) make the worst border patrol agents look like shining heroes of great nobility and enlightenment. This is a job that belongs in the hands of decent, professional people, not amateur mercenaries with big guns and tiny brains.

border patrol complaining about being drafted into daycare on a sustained basis. Having taught before, it takes a a whole different personality, stress tolerance, and skill set. And they serve burritos across America because they're good. And cheap. So though I'm highly attuned to racism anywhere, just don't see it here.
