Democrat Chuck Hassebrook and Republican Pete Ricketts have ratcheted up their war of words over a proposed state minimum wage hike, making it clear the issue could play a pivotal role in Nebraskas governors race.
Hassebrook has accused Ricketts of being out of touch with working Nebraskans, saying Ricketts opposition to raising the minimum wage shows he doesnt understand how critical the issue is for thousands of Nebraskans.
Ricketts fired back that Hassebrooks support of the pay hike was an example of a top-down approach to government that typically failed. He argued that a government-mandated wage hike would force small Nebraska businesses to cut jobs to pay for the increase.
A minimum wage hike can hurt the very people its trying to help, said Ricketts, a former top executive with TD Ameritrade who won his partys nomination last month in a six-way GOP primary field.
