Democrat Chuck Hassebrook and Republican Pete Ricketts have ratcheted up their war of words over a proposed state minimum wage hike, making it clear the issue could play a pivotal role in Nebraska’s governor’s race.

Hassebrook has accused Ricketts of being “out of touch” with working Nebraskans, saying Ricketts’ opposition to raising the minimum wage shows he doesn’t understand how “critical” the issue is for thousands of Nebraskans.

Ricketts fired back that Hassebrook’s support of the pay hike was an example of a “top-down approach” to government that typically failed. He argued that a government-mandated wage hike would force small Nebraska businesses to cut jobs to pay for the increase.

“A minimum wage hike can hurt the very people it’s trying to help,” said Ricketts, a former top executive with TD Ameritrade who won his party’s nomination last month in a six-way GOP primary field.

Is it to prove they're extra white? Or to hide the white hair so they don't seem as old and out of touch?
