Phoenix VA gave out $10 mil in bonuses in past 3 years
Source: Arizona Republic (Phoenix)
Newly released records show the Phoenix VA Health Care System paid out roughly
$10 million in bonuses during the past three years, when some staff manipulated
patient wait-time records to trigger bonuses as veterans died awaiting care.
Bonus payouts increased significantly under Sharon Helman, who became director
of the Phoenix VA in February 2012. She was placed on administrative leave last
month with two other top staff members amid accusations of mismanagement
stemming from the bonus scandal. Helman could not be reached, but previously
has said she was unaware of fraudulent record-keeping or patient deaths caused by delays.
Records show 4,188 bonuses were paid over the past three fiscal years to more than
2,150 employees, including doctors, nurses, administrators, secretaries and cleaners.
Nearly 650 VA employees received a bonus in each of the three years. The VA has
about 2,500 employees.
The Arizona Republic, after asking for bonus records at least 10 times since March,
obtained the data Friday from the Department of Veteran Affairs under the federal
Freedom of Information Act.

(6,890 posts)What is the issue with Nurses, Doctors, and Cleaning Staff getting bonuses? Most if not all are hard working people. The real criminals are the BFEE.

(3,919 posts)in my opinion. they receive good, decent pay, retirement, regular pay increases, generous vacation and sick time, and healthcare. sheesh. much more than civilian service employees.
i can understand for profit businesses gifting bonuses when there are profits. but government is not a for profit business. if it is, something is wrong. any profit should go back to the taxpayers.

(6,241 posts)the problems with the VA is funding. So they are failing at what they do, and getting huge bonuses? And if the staff at this place manipulated patient records to get these bonuses, one might argue that they committed fraud, and deserve to be fired.

(9,974 posts)The VA system gets their funding in a lump sum before their money year starts. In order to get the same amount or more the following year they have to use up the money from the current year. If they don't, the people in DC say "well gosh you had money left over last year so you don't need as much next year. Least that is what I have heard while working at a VA facility. May partially why they were handing out bonus money so much.
This is also one reason why the hospitals and clinics are never effected when there are gov shutdown..VA already has their money upfront. The only dept that is at risk (at least at our place) is the research department that is funded differently.
And I never understand how they hand out overtime pay SO much. Why not hire more people and staff the places decently? Instead they have to use tons of people pulling in a shitload of OT pay.

(5,861 posts)but clearly wait-times were the wrong measuring stick for performance based bonuses.
What a disaster.
Make room at Leavenworth indeed.

(940 posts)government trough. Stealing the public and veterans money. If
dems were running that place fox noise would have had them arrest and that VA center closed by now.
No congressional hearing tells me they are ALL republicans stealing the veterans money and calling it bonuses.
Call it what it is.
